The social network collects data on roughly 1.6 billion Facebook users, which is then used to determine behavioural patterns like voting habits, relationship status and effects of certain types of content on people, wsj.com reported on Tuesday. Facebook published a psychological study involving 700,000 persons in 2014 that sparked controversy about the company's ethics. Because "the issues of how to deal with research in an industry setting aren't unique to Facebook," the company decided to release more details, said Molly Jackman, Facebook's public-policy research manager and co-author of the 2014 study. To assess the ethical impact of its research efforts, Facebook has set up a five-person panel that includes experts in law and ethics.
If a manager determines that a research project deals with sensitive topics such as mental health, the study gets a detailed review by the group to weigh risks and benefits, as well as to consider whether it is in line with consumers' expectations of how their information is stored, wsj.com said. Managers have been authorised to simply approve proposals that th
Apple iOS 10 is finally here and it promises a variety of new features from a smarter Siri to interactive Messages. Here's a quick look.
iOS 10 is finally here with users and developers getting a first glimpse at the new version of Apple’s OS for iPhones, iPads and iPods at the annual WorldWide Developer Conference (WWDC 2016).
Apple CEO Tim Cook called it “the mother of all releases” as it packs 10 major new features for iOS.
This version of the mobile OS also signals an Apple that is more open, as Message and Siri SDKs will be made accessible to third-party app developers. So what does iOS 10 offer and when exactly will be available? Will it be compatible with your current iOS device? Here’s a detailed look at all those answers.
Availability and Compatibility:
First up, the developer preview of iOS 10 is now available to iOS Developer Program members at developer.apple.com. Just like with iOS 9, a public beta program will be available to iOS users in July at beta.apple.com.
iOS 10 will be available this fall as a free software update for iPhone 5 and later, all iPad Air and iPad Pro models, iPad 4th generation, iPad mini 2 and later, and iPod touch 6th generation.
Messages will be much more fun:
Messages will be much more fun:
If you look at the iOS 10 page on the Apple website, Messages occupies the most important part of the upgrade, and it’s not surprising. Apple says Messages is the most frequently used iOS app, and this time it gets an upgrade to make it all fun.
Apple is adding animations like balloons, confetti or fireworks that can take over an entire screen to celebrate a special occasion, invisible ink to send a message which is only revealed after a friend swipes over it, and handwritten notes option for more a personal touch.
Emojis will play a big role in the new update Messages app, and iOS 10 will automatically suggest emojis that can replace a particular word in a message. Think words like Happy, Excited, Sad; you can now just go for an emoji instead with a simple tap. It also means you don’t have to keep scrolling forever in the keyboard to find the right emoji.
Tapback is the new feature which let users respond with a simple tap. Users can also send rich links to play content inline (even Apple Music links or open entire articles) without actually leaving the conversation thread.
Apple is also opening up Messages to developers so they can create apps, other experiences within Messages to let users do more in the chat threads. Just like Facebook Messenger wants to add its own App Store, Messages in iOS will have also one. As Apple VP Craig Federighi showed in the demo, it will be possible for users to order food collectively from a group thread in Messages, and even do payments using some of these special apps.
Messages will also support GIFs, ability to edit photos. There’s also a feature called Digital Touch Mode, where users can create fun videos/photos and send them in the app.
Siri gets Smarter and more open:
As was predicted, Apple is opening up Siri to third-party developers by making the SDK available to them. This means app developers can now create commands letting Siri interact with their app. Users will able to call for a cab in Uber or book a table on OpenTable, by using the Hey Siri command.
Apple’s SiriKit will help developers design their apps to work with Siri for messaging, phone calls, photo search, ride booking, personal payments and workouts, or use Siri to control CarPlay apps, access climate controls or adjust radio settings within automakers’ apps.
iPhone and iPad users will find that Siri will be able to do lot more on their devices with iOS 10 update.
Maps:
Apple Maps has also been redesigned and will now have a slide up tab showing time to work, calendar appointments etc. Apple is adding its ‘proactive assistance’ feature to Maps to help figure out your route, based on appointments or daily routine.
Apple Maps also gets new extensions, and again third-party apps can be integrated with Maps. In the US, apps like OpenTable will integrate bookings right into Maps, and services like Uber and Lyft will also be integrated. Google Maps in India is already integrated with Uber, Ola and shows cab options as well. Hopefully the upgrade Apple Maps with extensions will be available to users across the globe.
Once a route is planned, Maps can search for gas stations, restaurants, coffee shops and more and provides an estimate of how the stop impacts the length of the trip. In India, Maps doesn’t support all these features yet.
Photos:
Photos gets an upgrade in iOS 10 to become smarter and help people find photos from forgotten occasions. Memories as Apple calls it, will scan photos and videos and finds forgotten events, trips and people, and puts them in all in one collection. Sort of what Google is doing with its own Photos app.
There’s also the Memory Movie, which is an automatically edited movie with theme music, titles and cinematic transitions.
Apple’s Craig Federighi explained the company is relying on advanced computer vision, facial recognition techniques, object and scene recognition to create these ‘Memories.’ Apple insists that Memories does not compromise user privacy.
Home App:
HomeKit App will now be replaced by a simpler Home app, and this is mostly for those who have a smart home. Home will be a one-stop app to manage all those smart accessories in the house, be it the lights or the curtains. And yes, users can also control them via Siri. Users can also set up automatic triggers according to time of day or action. For most users based in India, this might not be so relevant.
Privacy:
We know privacy is a top-agenda for Apple, and the recent FBI standoff made this quite clear. Apple says in iOS iMessage, FaceTime, and HomeKit will use end-to-end encryption to protect user data, making sure it can’t be read by anyone, not Apple or third-parties.
Apple also says it will use “on-device intelligence” to identify the people, objects and scenes in Photos, and power QuickType suggestions. Additionally data sent from Siri, Maps, News etc won’t be used to build user profiles, even though it will sent to Apple’s Servers.
iOS 10 will see Apple use a technology called Differential Privacy to help discover the usage patterns of a large number of users without compromising individual privacy. Apple says this will help them improve QuickType and emoji suggestions, Spotlight deep link suggestions and Lookup Hints in Notes.
Apple Music:
Apple Music has been redesigned to make it easier to use. The Library, For You, Browse and Radio tabs have been revamped
Apple News:
The News app has also been redesigned with a new “For You” section, support for breaking news notifications and paid subscriptions.
iOS 10 User Experience:
The new ‘Raise to Wake’ function automatically wakes the screen as you raise your iPhone. Lock Screen is now more interactive with richer notifications, which display entire texts, photos, videos.
There’s also a deeper 3D Touch integration with iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus for apps like Weather, Stocks, Calendar.
QuickType:
A smart Siri will offer QuickType option adding contextual predictions when you’re typing based on relevant information. Predictive typing now supports multiple languages without switching keyboards.
Phone app:
In iOS 10, the Phone app adds integration for third-party VoIP calls, voicemail transcription and a new caller ID extension for spam alerts. Apple says it will work internationally, and hopefully in India too.
Safari:
Safari now supports split-view for iPad.
Notes:
Users can now collaborate on a Note, sort of like how sharing works on Google Docs.
Live Photos:
Live Photos can now be edited, and come with inbuilt stabilisation.
Apple Pay:
Apple Pay is being extended to websites on Safari, in addition to paying in-stores and within apps.
To know more cool features of iOS 10 please refer to the following video :
Facebook, world's largest social networking platform, added 1 more exciting feature to maintain its position. Facebook users can now leave videos as comments on posts and status updates.
Video can be uploaded by selecting the camera icon underneath a string of replies previously used only to add a photo. Users will now be able to upload their own video clip on Facebook's iOS and Android app, as well as on its regular site.
The feature was prototyped in a single day as part of the company's 50th Hackathon early this year, but was honed over the past few months, Facebook engineer Bob Baldwin explaining that it was "no small feat to add support across interfaces and within two heavy traffic services, like comments and videos."
The increased video views have helped drive Facebook's shares up, as features like the new video upload ensure that moving images are visible at every level of its network.
The social network has increasingly focused on adding new features over past few years like: Add 360 degree photo to Facebook newsfeed, Set video as profile pic, Calling Uber, Usernames & Codes.
Started in 2005 by Chad Hurley, Jawed Karim and Steve Chan, Youtube is currently world’s most popular video sharing website. According to Google, which bought the website in 2006, over 800 million users visit YouTube every month, over three billion hours of videos are watched every month and over 72 hours of video content is uploaded every minute. In the recent years, the website has tried to attract more professional video content producers. It has tied up with several Hollywood studios and gives people a share in the advertisement revenue if they sign up for the Youtube partner programme to produce exclusive content for the website.

With its reach and popularity, it has also emerged as a repository of first-person account. For example in the case of 2011 tsunami in Japan, videos shot by amateur people appeared on Youtube minutes after the disaster. At the same time, its growing popularity has forced it to deal with several contentious issues like copyright infringement, which is considered to be rampant on the website as users often upload copied video content without any regard for the rights of original producers.
YouTube's Messaging App
YouTube is testing a messaging feature in its smartphone app so people can share and discuss videos without resorting to other ways to connect with their friends and family.
The messaging option announced Friday initially is only being offered to a small group of people with YouTube's app installed on an iPhone or device running on Google's Android software. If all goes well, messaging will be included in a future app update available to everyone with an iPhone or an Android phone.
YouTube, part of Alphabet Inc.'s Google, is examining whether the messaging feature will encourage its audience to spend even more time inside its popular video app.
Currently, people typically copy links to YouTube and paste them into text messages or other messaging apps such as Snapchat, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.
By removing a reason for its audience to switch over to another app, YouTube can generate more opportunities to show ads to the more than 1 billion people who watch video on its service.
WhatsApp, owned by Facebook Inc., has more than 1 billion users, while Facebook's own Messenger app has more than 900 million users, posing a threat to other digital services vying for people's attention.
Snapchat is smaller, with about 100 million daily users, but growing rapidly, particularly among teenagers and young adults who tend to watch a lot of video on their smartphones.
The recently leaked database containing nearly 33 million Twitter login credentials , including passwords in plain text, is definitely the real deal.
In a blog post Friday, Twitter confirmed it started warning users whose accounts may have been affected, as well as locking some accounts and sending a password reset request to the account owners.
Twitter maintains the stolen passwords were not the result of a hack, but have rather been "amassed from combining information from other recent breaches, malware on victim machines that are stealing passwords for all sites, or a combination of both."
The post doesn't say how many users were affected; only that "a number of Twitter accounts were identified for extra protection." However, Twitter confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that the number is "in the millions."
Leakedsource, a site that collects stolen login credentials and puts them in an online database, said Wednesday this particular leak contains 32,880,300 Twitter credentials.
The leak follows a string of high-profile Twitter accounts being hacked, including those belonging to Katy Perry, Drake, Mark Zuckerberg and Evan Williams.
Choosing a good Password:
By now, most internet users are aware that choosing a strong password is important. What, exactly, constitutes a strong password has changed quite a bit over the years.
Today, a good password should be at least 12 characters long, preferably longer. It should contain numerals as well as lowercase and uppercase letters. It should not contain easily guessable personal information; if you're called Michael and are born on September 12, 1967, then "Michael-09121967" is not a good password. In fact, even though you can create a solid password by stringing together common words
Never use the same password twice
If you're using the same password on multiple sites, you could still be in trouble. If only one of those sites get compromised — as LinkedIn did, when someone stole more than a hundred million usernames and passwords in 2012 — a hacker could try out your email address and the same password on other online services.
Sometimes, if a site has very shoddy security, hackers might obtain your password in plain text. Most often, the passwords will be encrypted or hashed, so the hacker will have to crack the passwords, which is where choosing a good password comes into play. But hackers today have access to very powerful computers and some smart cracking algorithms, meaning that — with time — even very strong passwords can get cracked.
The best way to avoid this is to have a separate password for every online service you use, especially those important to you (Facebook, Twitter) or ones that can actually cost you money (PayPal, eBay).
Use a password manager
This is where things get problematic for most users. After a while, remembering strong passwords becomes a chore, or even impossible. This is where password managers, such as LastPass or Dashlane, come into play. These services "store" all your passwords, often automatically filling out your online credentials, but you can only unlock them with a master password, so that's the one password you really need to remember.
A caveat to this method is the fact that if your master password gets stolen, you're in trouble, as a hacker can gain access to all your passwords. This is why you must choose a very strong master password, never store it on your computer and never share it with anyone.
Note that even password managers are prone to vulnerabilities. You might choose not to use one and just keep your passwords in your head, or offline, on a piece of paper in a safe. That's perfectly fine, just don't lose the piece of paper.
Use two-factor authentication
Even if you're really careful, mistakes will happen. An ancient service you forgot you've ever used could get compromised, come back and bite you from behind. Or you could connect to the wrong Wi-Fi network and become a victim of a stalker-hacker stealing every bit of info you sent out from your computer. (By the way, don't connect to Wi-Fi you don't trust. Ever).
WhatsApp has got a new feature that will let users quote messages when replying. While earlier this week, the new feature was spotted in beta builds of WhatsApp for Android, it is now rolling out for most users across Android and iOS running the general release builds from Google Play and the App Store.
The message quotes and replies feature is self-explanatory and the user needs to long press a message in any conversation to see a reply option pop up alongside star, delete, forward, and copy.
On tapping the reply button, the original message will appear as a quote, and users can reply to that. On the receiver's end, the quoted message will appear as a grey box with the reply below it. The feature works on one-to-one chats as well as group chats.
The last month update to the platform was last month - the addition of documents sharing on WhatsApp Web. Shortly before that, the company rolled out its first desktop app for Windows and OS X.
After a month of beta testing, WhatsApp has finally rolled out v2.12.250 to Android users, which brings a number of features to the popular messaging app. Not only do you get more control over your messaging options with the new update, it also gives you more emojis and decreases the amount of data used in WhatsApp calls.
5 new features that the latest WhatsApp update has brought to Android:
- Android users can mark messages as unread even after reading them.To be clear, this feature does not make it appear as if you have not read the message yet, and your messages will appear as read to senders even after you mark them as unread. Instead, it can be used to highlight messages so you can get back to them later.
- Custom notifications: WhatsApp is bringing its whole set of custom options, which were available only for the whole app till now, for individual contacts.
For example, if you want to set a specific ringtone for a contact, you can select any song from your playlist, so you know the messages and calls are from that particular person even without looking at your smartphone.
Similarly, you can set notification light colours, custom call and message contain ringtones, enable or disable vibrations and pop-up notifications for each contact.
- Mute individual contacts :
Till now, we have only been able to mute group conversations, but with the new update Android users are able to mute individual contacts as well.
If you want to mute any person on your contact list, check the Mute bar in the About menu. Slide the Mute bar to the right and you will see duration for which you can mute the chat: 8 hours, a week, or a year.
- Lower data consumption in WhatsApp calls:
If you make a lot of WhatsApp calls and want to reduce your data consumption, WhatsApp has added a new option in the app for that purpose.
Under Chats and Calls menu in Settings, you will notice a new option called Low Data Usage at the bottom of the scroll. Just click the box and you will be able to save some data while making voice calls using WhatsApp.
- New emojis and more skin tones:
The new update brings a set of new emojis to WhatsApp for Android, c such as the Spock salute, the rather- rude middle finger, more diverse facial emojis, and a bunch of LGBT c emojis. On top of that, several emojis now come in different skin tones.
- But no Google Drive integration
Though we saw Google Drive integration in the beta testing stage, the latest Android update for WhatsApp has excluded it. We expect it to be rolled out in the near future, and make backing up chats, images, videos, voice messages etc much easier.
Facebook Inc on Thursday launched a new feature that allows users to upload photos with 360-degree views.
With this new feature of Facebook, we can, not only upload photos taken from 360-degree cameras, but also panoramic photos taken on a mobile phone can be converted to a 360-degree view on the newsfeed, the company said on Thursday.
The photos can also be seen in virtual reality compatible devices, Facebook said.
In last September Facebook rolled out a similar service for video.
Facebook has become so much a part of our life now. I have few statistics about Facebook users. Worldwide, there are over 1.65 billion monthly active Facebook users (MAUs) which is a 15 percent increase year over year. There are 1.51 billion mobile active users (MAU) for March 2016. If you are thinking a lot over your updates, just beware it is a sign of being an addict.
Sharing their location (which is a major drawback with the proliferation of smartphones) this intriguing thing is keeping the users’ privacy at stick, even though they know it.
In a Psychological point of view, Lot of activities that we do in Facebook portrays that we are trying to influence the way people see us, to get people to like us.
The use of Facebook has increased rapidly. It occurs more regularly among younger than older users. Also studies have proved that people who are anxious and socially insecure use Facebook and other social medias more those with lower score on those traits. It is probably because who are anxious find it easier to communicate through these social media than face-to-face.
Checking Facebook status often whenever possible, over sharing of photos, overly concerned with Facebook image, spending hours and hours in browsing through Facebook every day, mad about increasing your friends list, compromising real social life, loads of games addiction are all signs of Facebook addiction.

To give decade old social networking site 'Facebook' a new look, so that its user do not get bor of it, Facebook is introducing four big changes to user profiles. These changes are expected to make Facebook more visually stimulating and addicting.
Let’s get to know about each new feature individually:
1. Profile Videos
Facebook has already rolled out this feature, according to this users will be able to make 7 seconds long video as their profile pic. This feature was rolled out for iOS users earlier now this is also available for android version 77.0.0
We can simply tap the record button and can shoot 7 seconds long video with sound. The looping video will auto-play without sound (unless clicked) on your profile. We can also set thumbnail of video as our profile pic. Facebook for iOS also lets you mute the sound of profile videos, the option for which you'll find when trimming your video. With Android, you are stuck with sound for profile videos.
2. Featured Photos
The next biggest feature is now we will be able select five Featured Photos. These photos will appear at the top of our profile. This is designed so that before sending friend request users will be able get a better clue to your identity. They’re not your main profile pic, but they’ll be used to judge you.
3. Temporary Profile Pics
This feature let you select a profile pic, but have yours revert to your old pic after a set number of hours, days, or weeks. It’s useful for promoting a cause, like the 26 million people who set their profile pic rainbow in support of the right to gay marriage.
4. Visibility Controls And Bio
Now we will be able to able to describe ourself in words with a new 100-character Bio field. This feature is added so that based on bio people can decide if they want to be your friend or not. This feature will appear at the top of our profile.
90% of people reading this post must be facebook addict, spending 2-3 hours daily on Facebook. Still, there are some features of Facebook, which we are not aware of. I had already learned & tried these features, now its your turn.
1. Hidden Inbox
We use only our regular inbox and very few know that a secret inbox also exists. Facebook has made this for covenience of users, so that we don't get bombarded with messages from weirdos.
Open message section of your Facebook account, then click requests> see filtered requests. Suddenly you will be surprised to see many messages mostly from unknows.
2. Download Album
Downloading images 1 by 1 is quiet a tedious task. But, Facebook has already made it easy for its users. Head to album and click drop down menu in corner.
3. Blocking Game Request
Many of us must be getting hundreds of request to play games on Facebook.
You have two options: You can block all invitations from the app you’re not interested in; or you can block all invitations from the people who invite you to every damn app on Facebook. Also, you can set things up so app invites don’t appear in your notifications.
4. Calling Uber
This is the most amazing trick, which we can't even expect.Facebook is trying to give the functionality of all the other major apps on one platform.
One of the best Facebook chat tricks is that you can order an Uber from within the messenger app itself. But, initially you should have login into your Uber account. Then you will get a car symbol, click on it. You can also call Uber by sending message through Facebook..
5. Receiving Notifications On Login
Protect your account by adding another layer of security. Many of us had already have set up two-factor authentication for our account. If not, do this in Settings > Security.
Another new trick available in Settings > Security is to get login alerts whenever someone logs in to your account Facebook account. These alerts can be sent via your browser and devices, or to your registered email addresses. This can also help we forget our password, it can help to recover our account.

6. Using Advanced Chat Setting
Are there a some people who always irritate while chatting. Now, we can easily get rid of such type of people, without blocking them. We can adjust Facebook Messenger such that, these people will never see us online as available to chat.
When on Facebook, you’ll see the Messenger docked into the lower right-hand side. At the bottom of this is a settings cog that says “Options” when you hover over it. Click here and you can fine-tune exactly who sees you online and can chat to you.

7. Showing Posts Liked By You To Selective People
Liking pages or posts on Facebook is just something we do every now and then, with no real thought as to who might see that we’ve liked the page and what that might mean to them.
It’s really easy to permanently adjust these settings if you’re in the habit of keeping your Facebook friends lists in order.
Head to http://Facebook.com/{YourName}/likes, click on the edit pencil and choose manage privacy. The settings for each genre of “Likes” will be visible and able to be managed using the same privacy options available to you elsewhere on the site.

8. Live Video
Facebook Live Video is Facebook’s answer to Snapchat and Periscope, combining some of the best features of each into a tool any Facebook user can use. It’s just rolled out to most accounts, groups and pages worldwide and is a whole lot of fun to try.
You might like to use it to show your distant family what’s going on at your birthday party, or to make your friends jealous of the festival you’re at. Business people might show off some new products or do a behind-the-scenes introduction to staff.
If you’re shy, watching live video is still a fun activity. Facebook lets you add emotive responses and comments to the post, and future viewers can follow the activity as it went down, along with joining in with the conversation below as per any Facebook post.
