On call drop problem, Mr. Mehrotra said that now significant improvement has been made with the help of Telecom Ministry, it was an issue 7-8 months back.
“Still we are finding it tough to install mobile sites in new buildings that are coming up in NCR region as resident welfare associations resist installing mobile towers. We have faced issues in Lutyen Delhi area and East Delhi and we are working to resolve it,” Mr. Mehrotra said.
The company also unveiled special scheme for youths, Vodafone U, offering calling and data usage at reduced rates.

Reliance Jio Infocomm is likely to further delay the nationwide launch of its long-awaited 4G network until the end of the year, according to two investment firms.
Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a client note that Jio will likely delay its 4G launch until “it is confident of creating a strong first impression, both in terms of network quality and customer experience”, the Economic Times reported. The note said that the delay would make it increasingly difficult to attract high-value customers from rivals unless it cuts data tariffs.

Bharti Airtel, Vodaone India and Idea Cellular have aggressively expanded their 4G footprints. Market leader Airtel has launched 4G in 15 regions, while Vodafone India offers 4G service in five service areas and Idea offers it in ten.
Jio said in early January, after multiple delays over the past ten months, it would officially launch 4G service across the country by early March. The operator reportedly delayed the launch as it had not yet reached its targeted population coverage.
Bank of America Merrill Lynch noted that a delay until December would allow Jio to offer 4G service in between 60 per cent to 70 per cent of cities and avoid a phased a launch, which would give its rivals an opportunity to “defend their turf”.
IIFL Institutional Equities also expects Jio to push back the national launch until December, noting that the timing depends on the merger between Reliance Communications (RCom) and Sistema Shyam Teleservices (SSTL), which is waiting for regulatory approval. RCom announced it November it would acquire its smaller rival, which operate under the MTS brand, through a stock swap.
In January RCom said that it would share its 800MHz spectrum with Jio in 17 regions. RCom also plans to share 800MHz spectrum in the remaining five circles. Spectrum sharing will give RCom access to a wider band of spectrum and Jio’s network to provide faster 4G data services and provide capex and operating costs savings.
IIFL reckons that Jio will be able to use RCom’s spectrum only towards December since it can share and trade spectrum with Jio only after obtaining alternative 800MHz frequencies through a merger with SSTL, the Times reported.
America-Merrill Lynch noted a delay would give the 4G handset ecosystem time to mature, since only 15 per cent of smartphones sold in India support VoLTE and the 800MHz band. But it would also give rivals an additional eight months to expand their 4G networks and migrate customer over and make data tariffs more competitive.
Jio, which now has 25,000 employees, is the first operator to obtain a pan-India unified licence, holding 751.1MHz across the 800MHz, 1.8GHz and 2.3GHz bands in multiple regions, and has invested a reported $15 billion in the rollout.

The report “Fourth Quarter, 2015, State of the Internet Report” was released by Akamai Technologies Inc., a global leader in content delivery network services.
“From a global perspective, the average connection speed increased 8.6 per cent quarter-over-quarter and 23 per cent year-over-year to 5.6 Mbps, while the global average peak connection speed increased 1 per cent QoQ, and increased 21 per cent YoY to 32.5 Mbps,” it said.
South Korea had the highest average connection speed in the Asia-Pacific region at 26.7 Mbps, while India had the lowest at 2.8 Mbps.
“This quarter’s (October to December 2015) report shows great YoY growth in average connection speeds and overall broadband adoption,” said David Belson, editor of the report.
South Korea (95.3 Mbps) and Macao (83.1 Mbps) were the only countries/regions to post double-digit quarterly gains in average peak connection speed at 10 percent and 13 per cent, respectively.
“This is particularly important as consumer expectations rise and many high-profile events, like the summer games in Rio, will be streamed this year.
“The progress we are seeing across our key metrics shows that, while there’s still work to be done, more parts of the world are increasingly able to support the delivery of broadcast-quality video content online,” he added.
The report also showed each of the top 10 countries/regions saw double-digit growth in 25 Mbps broadband adoption except Hong Kong, which posted a 9.8 per cent change quarter-over-quarter. Norway and Denmark saw the greatest yearly gains, the report cited.

Consumers today are looking at increasing data speeds. The telecommunications industry has progressed from 2G, to 3G and now awaiting 4G to be adapted by the masses. Although, the debate may not be restricted to connectivity or the speed, India is definitely buying a lot of 4G-enabled smartphones this year. Although the rollout of services by operators may have been delayed, and eventually leading to what appears to be a decreased adoption of 4G services, the IDC’s Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker points out that smartphone buyers aren’t hindered.
The same IDC Q3 report points out that 1 in every 3 smartphone buyers is purchasing a 4G smartphone and e-tailers such as Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon are fuelling the sales of these 4G devices.
To get a clearer picture, lets delve into details of IDC’s Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report. Samsung continues to emerge as the leader with 24 percent market share, followed by Micromax at 16.7 percent. Intex and Lenovo have also managed to up their market share by 3.1 percent and 6.4 percent, respectively in Q2 2015. In fact, Lenovo could also emerge as Micromax’s next competitor if the trends continue.
Lenovo and Micromax have been doling out cheaper 4G smartphones by the dozens. Over the last three months, Micromax launched its Canvas Pace 4G, Canvas Xpress 4G, Canvas Blaze 4G, Fire 4G and the Play 4G! Clearly, smartphone buyers are spoilt for choice with 4G options being sold at a starting price under Rs 5000.
According to a recent study by Nokia Networks, even 3G adoption is slow. The study reveals that with 144 million users out of 225 million, 3G smartphone owners have, in reality, subscribed to a 3G connection. The key here is future proofing. Buyers seem to be future proofing their purchases by buying a smartphone that is 4G ready despite having no plans to pick up a 3G subscription. Let alone a 4G one!
Even 5G-ready smartphones would elicit a similar curiosity. According to the IDC forecast, smartphones sales will over take those of feature phones in 2016, which is a significant shift. But then again, it appears that most consumers are purchasing a 4G smartphone that would eventually run on a 2G network. Although this is great for smartphone manufacturers, consumer are yet to benefit from high speed devices whose potential remains untapped, at best.
Micromax has soft-launched yet another 4G smartphone this month called the Canvas Pace 4G. The smartphone is an entry-level device and packs in the basics with its 4G radios being the highlight.
Indeed, this is the third smartphone that Micromax has announced this month after the Canvas Xpress 4G and the recently announced Canvas Amaze (we guess it will run out of names if it continues at this pace).
The Micromax Canvas Pace 4G packs in 5 inch FWVGA (854 x 480 pixels) IPS display on the front. Inside, we get a 1.1 GHz, quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 chipset with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage that is expandable up to 32 via a micro SD card.
The camera department includes a 5 MP autofocus unit on the back accompanied by an LED flash and a 2 MP unit up front for selfies. The handset boots to Android 5.0 Lollipop and packs in the usual connectivity options including a dual SIM set up for 4G and 3G bands. All of the above is powered by a 2500 mAh battery.
Its closest competitor is indeed the Yu Yuphoria and the Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime. The Micromax Canvas Pace 4G is currently retailing for Rs 6821 on Ebay and on the company’s official website only in the black variant.

India is expected to have 9 crore 4G subscribers and 18 crore 4G smartphones by 2018 and Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular will gain from this growth if Reliance Jio Infocomm delays the launch of its 4G services, says a report by Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BofA ML).
“We expect 4G smartphone base to jump from 5 million in FY 2015 to 180 million (18 crore) by FY 2018, leading to 4G subscribers accelerating from almost zero in FY 2016 to 90 million (9 crore) by FY 2018,” a report by BoFA ML research analysts Sachin Salgaonkar, Karan Parmanandka and Simon Dong-je Woo said.
In next few years, there will be marginal difference between 3G and 4G tariffs as well as there will be decline in smartphone prices that may lead 2G subscribers leapfrog to 4G services and skip 3G, analysts expect.
“We expect 4G net adds to be faster than 3G net adds by FY 2019 and estimate 3G subscribers to be largely restricted in areas where 4G coverage is limited. “However, we do expect 3G subscribers uptake to be strong for the next couple of years, at least, as 3G coverage would likely be better than 4G coverage,” the report said.
The analysts said that the big three players – Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular – will gain if Reliance Jio Infocomm commercial 4G service launch is delayed.
“With all the big 3 telcos expected to have rolled out 4G selectively in key urban areas before March, 2016 we expect their top-end (high usage) consumers to migrate to 4G. “This, in our view, will make it difficult for Jio to poach these subscribers as the company would need to focus on offering a differentiated service,” it added.
As per last update from Reliance Jio, the company has not changed its position to launch its service in December as committed by chairman Mukesh Ambani.
Analysts said 4G tariffs are expected to come down with the launch of Reliance Jio 4G services but they do not see lower pricing strategy to be a sustainable offering by Jio to poach the subscribers.
“We note that top 5 per cent customers (mainly post-paid) of the big 3 telcos contribute to 15 per cent of their revenues. These customers are unlikely to switch to Jio given the comfort these customers have with their existing operators and general laziness to switch unless there is a very compelling proposition,” the report said.
It, however, estimates Reliance Jio to be market leader in terms of 4G subscriber base from 2017 onwards till 2025, followed by Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea Cellular.
Bharti Airtel has commercially launched 4G service in 296 cities with 35,000 base-stations and 4G tariffs at 3G prices. Vodafone has announced to launch 4G commercial service in some cities by December and Idea in 10 circles by June.
“The company (Jio) is looking for 4G phones to be priced between Rs 4,000-25,000. Jio would need a 5 band phone which works on 900, 2100 bands along with 800, 1800 and 2300 for seamless connectivity,” the report added.
Vodafone India on Wednesday says it has commenced testing of 4G and expects to roll out the service in phases in Kolkata from December.
"Vodafone will launch its 4G services in Kolkata by end of calendar year 2015. Key business corridors will be part of the first wave of the 4G roll-out, which will be launched across the circle in a phased manner," a Vodafone release said.
"Testing of 4G services has commenced successfully. Vodafone India has partnered with leading global technology infrastructure service providers for the network roll-out," it said.
The telecom major said Kolkata with 25% of data revenues is one of the top data markets for Vodafone in India and was growing at more than 50% YoY.
We are the leading service provider in Kolkata and our customers have a lot to look forward to. We will continue to pursue our customer-centric strategy of continuing to meet their evolving needs for better and smarter connectivity for both voice and data," Vodafone India business head Kolkata and West Bengal, Anand Sahai said.
Airtel has taken the lead when it comes to 4G services. The company has launched services ahead of Reliance Jio, Vodafone and Idea Cellular, allowing it to get the first movers advantage.
The company has also partnered with handset makers like Samsung and Apple and online retailer Flipkart to further spur its 4G services. Vittal said the ecosystem for 4G devices is fast evolving with price of handsets coming down to Rs.5,000 and may go further lower going forward. Mobile data revenue contributed 21.5 per cent of its India revenues, up from 14.5 per cent in the year-ago period. Data average revenue per user (ARPU) increased by Rs.42 to Rs.193 (year-on-year) in the reported quarter, led by 35.9 per cent increase in data usage per customer.
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) were Rs.8,265.3 crore during the quarter, an increase of 6.7 per cent as compared to Rs.7,749.4 crore in the year-ago period. The net debt of the company at the end of September 30 stood at Rs.70,777 crore.
The company's Africa operations extended the net loss to $170 million during the quarter under review, as compared to a net loss of $124 million in the year-ago period. Adjusted for the impact of divestment of its tower assets, Airtel's Africa revenues grew by 5.1 percent, the highest in the last 4 quarters, to USD 1,028 million as compared to $978 million in the corresponding quarter of last year. "Strong demand is being witnessed both in voice and data with our consumption increasing by 19.5 percent and 104.5 percent respectively. In the first half of the year, we have divested tower assets of $1.7 billion," Airtel Africa MD and CEO Christian de Faria said.
The company plans to sell all its mobile towers in Africa region. The company said during the reported quarter, agreement for sale of tower assets in Malawi with Eaton Towers has lapsed and therefore stands terminated. "Accordingly, assets so far held for sale and the related liabilities amounting to Rs.704 million and Rs.491 million respectively, have been re-classified from held for sale to its earlier classification," Airtel said. Meanwhile, speaking during an investor call, Vittal said the company is working with the government to address the call drop issue.
"We are working with the government to address the problem of fixing of network infrastructure by deploying cell towers, providing adequate and affordable spectrum as well as educating citizens on radiation fearsâ€We view this as the most effective way to address any call drop issue that may exist in the system," he added. On a query if Airtel could increase tariffs, Vittal said the company would look at opportunities but it won't be at the cost of losing competitiveness.

“In digital services, we have substantially completed the network rollout across the country and initiated the process of beta testing of our network and platforms,” chairman Mukesh Ambani said in a statement after declaring the company’s results for the quarter ended September 30.
In a filing with exchanges, Reliance said its Jio Infocomm has launched Wi-Fi hotspots across several locations in the country and has entered into accords with some of the state and local authorities to provide such services.Roll-out of last-mile connectivity for its fibre-to-the-home business is also on. The company, which holds a pan-India unified licence for all net-based services, including voice and data, said that the initial test results on the network were positive.”The company expects to ramp up its beta program over the next few weeks to further optimize the network, prior to commercial launch of operations. Financial year 2016-17 is projected to be the first year of commercial operations for Reliance Jio,” the company said.
Reliance Jio holds liberalized spectrum — 751.1MHz across the 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2300MHz bands. It plans to provide seamless 4G services using LTE in 800MHz, 1800MHz and 2300MHz bands through an integrated ecosystem.
The combined spectrum footprint across frequency bands provides significant network capacity and in-building coverage. Reliance Jio has filed intimation for sharing of spectrum in the 800MHz band with Anil Ambani-promoted Reliance Communications across seven circles to DoT.
Reliance Jio aims to offer end-to-end solutions that address the entire value chain across various digital services in key domains such as education, healthcare, security, communication, financial services, government-citizen interfaces and entertainment.
