  • Xiaomi Drone will swoosh over your head

    From the road, to the kitchen counter, to the skies. You can now add a drone to the ever-growing list of products that Xiaomi manufactures, either directly or through its network of partners and investees.


    The Mi Drone will be unveiled on May 25, according to a teaser from Hugo Barra, but we already know what it will look like, thanks to a teaser that surfaced on Youku.

    The brief teaser reveals a rather conventional-looking quadcopter equipped with a built-in camera of spherical shape. The large camera is mounted on a pivot and it looks like it’s able to capture video from 360 degrees.

    The video promises that more details will be revealed on the evening of May 25 at a live launch event.

    From older reports, we expect the Xiaomi drone to capture 4K content; users will be able to control it through a dedicated smartphone app or even a Mi Band wearable.


    As more consumers and businesses become aware of the potential of drones, the electronics industry is looking at the field for new avenues of growth. Component makers like Qualcomm already have dedicated drone solutions, which should make them even more accessible. Drones are also becoming more intelligent, thanks to the inclusion of technologies that were initially developed for mobile applications, like Google’s Tango or Intel’s RealSense.

    Xiaomi always aims to undercut competitors through low prices, regardless if we’re talking about smartphones, big screen TVs, or air purifies. Should DJI be worried?

  • Flying Car Is On Its Way

    Massachusetts-based aircraft company Terrafugia is aiming to develop a flying car since 2013. Now, the small prototype of car is ready.The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has just granted them permission to test them. That soon we won't be stuck in traffic jams any more.
                                            

    Now don’t get too much excited! The version they had developed till now is an autonomous drone, which means that nobody will be in the car. Furthermore, it will be a smaller-scale version than the actual car — about one tenth of the size. Although the car isn’t expected to be available for at least eight years.

    Terrafugia has been developing the car since 2013 and unveiled an upgraded version, the TF-X, this past July. Flying Car will travel at a speed of 200 miles (322 kilometers) per hour and a flight range of 500 miles (805 kilometers), anyone will be able to fly from point A to point B in the four-seat, hybrid electric vehicle. It doesn’t even require a runway to takeoff or land. In fact, Terrafugia claims that “operating the TF-X™ should be statistically safer than driving a modern automobile.” It will automatically avoid dangerous zones such as other air traffic, bad weather and restricted airspace. It will also include a full-vehicle parachute system and will auto-land if the “driver” becomes unresponsive.

    According to the company’s website, it will fit into our own regular garage and drive like a normal car. “When you want to go into flying mode, the wings will fold out, and twin electric motor pods on the ends will power up and lift the car off the ground using 1 megawatt of power. Two small helicopter-style propellers will provide thrust when needed, and are then folded back in when the car is cruising.”

    Although the test version, measuring two feet (61 centimeters) and no more than 55 pounds (25 kilograms), will not fly as high or for as long as the full-scale version, it will help Terrafugia to evaluate the hovering capabilities of the car. “Because of the unconventional configuration of the TF-X, it is vital to achieve sustained, stabilised hovering with smaller models before developing a full-size TF-X prototype,” Aero News Network reported.

  • Selfie Drone : Next Level of Obsession

    Annoyed by long selfie sticks in public? An Australian technology company has a solution -- a "selfie drone". This lets you click selfie without stretching the hand and gives you a perfect photo too.
    Built by Australian technology company IoT Group, the "ROAM-" drone opened for pre-sale on Thursday and will begin shipping internationally in June, Mashable website reported.

    According to Ian Duffell, executive director of the IoT Group, the company's vision was to build "a selfie stick on steroids".

    "The selfie stick's problem is it's confined by the length of the stick. The thought was, let's get the thing taking the picture flying with you," he was quoted as saying

    After being tethered to a smartphone, the two rotor "ROAM-e" can be programmed using facial recognition technology to follow the user at a distance of up to 25 metres.

    The device can take 360-degree panoramas and can even stream a live video for up to 20 minutes of flight time.

    The $267 device has a 5-megapixel CMOS sensor camera and runs on Quadcore ARM Cortex A7 processor. Its rotors can be folded.

    "We wanted it to be small enough to fit into a bag or pocket. We modelled it on not being bigger than a 600-millilitre water bottle," Duffell explained.

    "We all know drones fly around and take pictures, but because we've tailored it to be portable and in your space, it fits into a different category," he said.

    IoT Group said they will an extra capability that is the ability of the drone to drop a pin on a map application, instructing the ROAM-e to travel to that point and return.

    The Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) is working on drones that can have a huge effect on farming, as they can go farther out in the fields and monitor crops, as well as pinpoint exact locations of diseased plants easier and take photos for farmers. They can also release smaller, more directed amounts of pesticides so as not to waste them.

     
    4. Imagine H2O

    The non-profit Imagine H2O hosts an annual startup competition and an accelerator program to solve big water challenges for the billion people that live without access to clean drinking water. The winners of the competition have an opportunity to create a business with connections from the industry. Some of the topics for the competition include water efficiency, wastewater, and consumer innovations for water.

    Foodini is a 3D printer made for the kitchen, and the designers want you to get creative. Here, it makes cheese for a burger. The machine has also made the burgers themselves, as well as a variety of desserts. It's the first type of 3D printer that uses natural, fresh ingredients as the "ink."


    6. Sensors and precision agriculture

    Ag Leader, one of the leading precision technology hardware developers, created a device called OPTRX crop sensors, which measure and record data about crops using the reflectance of light shined on plants. The devices can attach to the machine to collect information while going through the field. It helps farmers apply chemicals, like nitrogen, on plants. 


    7. Love Food Hate Waste

    Started in the UK by a non-profit, Love Food Hate Waste is a website, designed to help reduce food waste and save money. It allows users to plug what they have as leftovers to make use of them, download recipes, and plan and shop more healthfully and frugally. Samsung has also partnered with the campaign to raise awareness about reducing food waste.

     
    8. Bitponics

    Bitponics is a personal gardening assistant to help monitor, analyze, and service a hydroponic garden. It has sensors that monitor the garden's health and environment. The Bitponics Cloud runs a personal Grow Plan, which runs crowdsourced blueprints for garden care, as well as sensor readings and shared tips from the community.

     
    9. Farm Hack

    It's an online, open source forum for farmers and people in the food industry to chat and get their questions about changing technology answered. Farm Hack, which is in partnership by the National Young Farmers Coalition, also hosts events like hackathons to create innovations in agriculture. Some products have been greenhouse monitors, electric tractors, mobile biotech labs, and a pedal-powered rootwasher.

    10. Vertical farms

    Their is very less space left for farming because of growing population. This problem is being solved by Dr. Dickson Despommier, a professor at Columbia University, who is a well-known champion of vertical farming. Ideally, each floor would be a different "field,". The skyscraper is basically greenhouse on top of greenhouse, using artificial light and hydroponic technology. It's a perfect use for abandoned warehouses or other high-rises.

    The prototype is an octocopter, meaning it has eight propellers allowing it to take off and land vertically like a helicopter.It also has wings and a pusher motor so once it reaches the recommended altitude of 400ft it can travel like a plane.This gives it the 15-mile range which Amazon hopes could revolutionize delivery.

    In a promotional video, Jeremy Clarkson outlines how the ambition is for packages to be delivered within 30 minutes.There was no indication of when it might be used by the retail giant.The firm was given permission to test delivery drones in the US earlier this year.

    Amazon also has drone delivery development centres in the UK and Israel.

  • Walmart To Execute Amazon-like Delivery Drones

    Walmart has become the latest U.S. retailer to ask for permission to test drones for making deliveries to customers in its parking lots and at customers' homes, following the lead of Amazon and smaller companies seeking exemptions from government drone rules.

    The retail giant applied to the Federal Aviation Administration for an exemption from current regulations Monday.

    Walmart has tested drones inside its facilities but now wants to do outdoor tests. To do that, it needs FAA permission to operate "small unmanned aircraft systems," as the industry calls drones.

    Walmart is using drones in an effort to create a more efficient supply chain, company spokesman Dan Toporek says.

    “You test for a reason,” he said, "because you learn during tests and you tend to evolve and figure out which approaches are most compelling to customers and most efficient for the business.”

    Toporek says Walmart is ready to start outdoor tests immediately if the FAA gives approval.

    The approval process typically takes 120 days, said Michael Drobac, executive director of the Small UAV Coalition, a drone industry group.

    Multiple other companies, including Amazon and Flirtey, a drone delivery startup based in Nevada, also are exploring how to conduct deliveries via drone. Through Oct. 22, the FAA has granted 2,020 permits for commercial drones for purposes such as aerial photography, pipeline inspection and agricultural monitoring.
  • BioCarbon Engineering, : " One Billion Trees At a Time"


    Deforestation downs 10 billion trees around the globe annually. Replanting trees by hand is slow, expensive, and barely puts a dent in reversing the damage. But one startup wants to use drones that can reforest our increasingly tree-strapped Earth, on a big enough scale to replace slow and expensive hired humans.

    Bio Carbon

    The small company, called BioCarbon Engineering, says unmanned aerial vehicles are a great way of covering ravaged woodlands with seedlings that can repopulate the area’s tree population. Around the world, forests and jungles are still being leveled due to lumber overproduction, strip surface mining, urban expansion, and land use for agriculture.

    But UK-based BioCarbon, founded by former NASA engineer Lauren Fletcher, has a plan: Use fixed-wing drones to map the topography of the land, as well as the nutrients and biodiversity. That info is put into a machine-learning algorithm to generate a “precision planting platform,” says Susan Graham, head of engineering at BioCarbon.


    Then, that info is uploaded into a multi-rotor, planting drone, which flies up to 10 feet above the ground, and fires a seed pod at a pre-determined position so that you can increase the survival rate. Graham calls it “precision forestry,” and can help use drones as a tool for reforestation teams or farmers. “Instead of having a spade, they’ll have a drone,” she says.

    It can be expensive and messy to send humans into remote areas or difficult terrain to plant trees. “Drones are a tool and you use them when it’s the right location and for the right reason,” CEO Fletcher says. “It doesn’t mean replacement.” It allows humans to be freed up and do something more productive—one of the things folks who think robots won’t steal our jobs often say. Drones and robots won’t replace us, but will simply complement the human task force.


    Last week, the team presented at United Nations Headquarters in New York at the Solutions Summit as one of 14 winning startups that were invited to the conference, which brought together innovators that want to address the 70-year-old global body’s list of Sustainable Development Goals. Next, BioCarbon is eyeing expansion, and already has a commitment from a plantation in South Africa to plant trees.

    Graham says trying out the service in many types of locations is key: If they can test in different conditions or environments, they’ll learn more about how to deal with different soils and species—not to mention cultures. Their ultimate goal is to plant a billion trees a year.

It's mighty cheap for a drone, with an introductory price of just $79 (£51), though those have all sold out. The recommended retail price is $149 (£95) – still pretty cheap.

    4. Ghost :
    The Ghost Drone by Ehang, Inc. is currently being offered through their Indiegogo campaign (IndieGoGo – Ghost Drone), and has great success in raising $600k OVER their original goal of $100k. Their claim to fame is that they state the Ghost is “the world’s easiest drone to fly.”
    The Ghost Drone was initially designed to be controlled from an Android smart phone. Since we received the unit, they have developed an IOS version, along with a proprietary remote control. On the Android app, the controls are self explanatory, with overlay buttons for taking off, landing, returning, and hovering. A map fills the screen, which allows you to tap anywhere you want the drone to go, and the drone’s orientation, altitude, and camera tilt are adjusted with the overlay sliding bars. For finer horizontal flight control, the app has a micro control pad and compass for orientation.
    To connect your smartphone with the Ghost Drone, there is a proprietary “G-Box” transmitter, which allowed us to safely control the drone almost ½ mile away in an open field with no obstructions.
    The programmers of Ghost Drone have been very busy, and they now have a unique tilt function that works similar to the micro control pad. To move the drone, you simply tilt your phone in the direction that you choose. They also have a proprietary controller in the works for more refined movement and control of the Ghost Drone.

    The Osmo is compatible with DJI’s Zenmuse camera series but the standard 12-megapixel camera is capable of 4K video and has a 1/2.3-inch image sensor. The camera has a 94 degree field-of-view lens.

    With Osmo, DJI has built all the controls right into the handle which makes switching between shooting angles, capturing or videos effortless. the universal mount works with an included smartphone holder and users can add optional accessories including tripod, bike mount or an extension arm.
    While the Osmo comes with an onboard camera, it can also bought separately. The Osmo’s handle is equipped with an on-board stereo microphone and also has a 3.5mm audio jack for connecting audio peripherals. With drones banned in India, DJI plans to bring Osmo to India very soon

  • OpenROV’s Trident is a drone that soars… underwater

     Forget the skies for a moment – this remote control robot lets everyone explore ‘neath the waves


    That’s about to change, thanks to San Francisco-based OpenROV. The startup has just opened a Kickstarter campaign for the Trident, a drone designed for underwater use.Small, sleek and portable (under 3kg in weight), the Trident doesn’t paddle sluggishly through the water but rather soars through it majestically like… well, like an aircraft. As you can see from the GIF below, there’s some real speed to this thing, but the makers say it’s also highly manoeuvrable in tight situations, and can be slowed down so that its HD video camera can scope out something you’ve spotted.
    The HD camera sends a live video feed back to you via the tether, which is directly linked to a radio buoy that floats on the water’s surface. The tether will be 25m long in the base model, but can be boosted to 100m with upgrades – meaning the Trident can dive to 100m. Your control device – laptop, tablet or smartphone – then receives the feed from the buoy via Wi-Fi.There’s fun to be had here, of course, but OpenROV sees the Trident as a tool that can be used professionally for exploration and underwater surveys. The drone can be piloted in long straight lines, videoing the ocean, river or lake bed in a lawnmower-like pattern. The visual data collected can then be used to build 3D models of topography, shipwrecks or anything else that lies in Davey Jones’ locker.The Kickstarter campaign has already smashed through its funding target, and pledging US$1,199 (₹79,000) or more will get you your very own Trident. You’ll have to wait over a year for delivery, however, with November 2016 currently the prediction.
