  • Google Working on Its Own Smartphone to Take on iPhone

Google Working on Its Own Smartphone to Take on iPhone

Google might soon launch its own branded Android smartphone. The Mountain View giant is said to be in discussions with mobile operators about the new Google-branded smartphone which may see light of the day by year end.

The move to launch its own Android smartphone is said to have more control over design apart from the software as well as to end the dominance of Apple's iPhone in high-end segment. The Telegraph citing people familiar with the discussions reports that the new Google-branded handset will "extend the company's move into hardware."

"The new device, which will be released by the end of the year according to a senior source, will see Google take more control over design, manufacturing and software," adds the report.
Google's CEO Sunder Pichai has been declining any plans to make Google-branded smartphones right now and has been stressing that the company will continue to collaborate with its partners on the Nexus range, with greater customisations. Google's move to make self-branded smartphones may also make the Nexus program irrelevant for OEMs.

iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus Pictures Reveal Design Changes

The photos from noted tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer show the back and the bottom portion of the iPhone 7. The back reveals a bump in the camera casing, revealing that the camera shall continue to protrude, but will come with a protective ring surrounding it.

The photos also provide conflicting evidence for the inclusion of the 3.5mm audio jack, making the mystery murkier.he camera hole is also a bit larger than its predecessor, and is placed near to the edge of the smartphone hinting at some changes in the camera hardware. It is rumoured that the iPhone 7 will come with a larger CMOS sensor, and these changes are a result of that upgrade.

The photos also show the bottom of the device, revealing the absence of the 3.5mm audio jack. With more free space, there are two speaker grilles alongside the Lightning port. A separate iPhone 7 Plus image reveals the dual camera setup at the back, something that has been rumoured on several occasions previously. On the iPhone 7 Plus, both the rear cameras are aligned horizontally right next to each other followed by the flash sitting beside it.

The next iteration is expected to see minimal design changes with few but crucial upgrades. Apple is expected to unveil its upcoming offering in three variants - iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone 7 Pro.

  • Origins of oxygen discovered in the Universe

A team of researchers just confirmed the presence of oxygen in a galaxy 13.1 billion light years away—the furthest oxygen has ever been detected. Their findings suggest that this may have been the first oxygen to form in the early universe.
Hailing from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan and a number of Japanese universities, the scientists based their conclusions on observational data collected by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observatory. They discovered the galaxy, SXDF-NB1006-2, just four years ago, and have been trying to identify the elements that are present ever since. They describe their findings in a new paper published inScience.
As expected, the galaxy contained hydrogen. But the team was much more curious about the potential presence of oxygen, which they hoped would give key information about how the element formed in the first place.
If oxygen was present, their models of the galaxy suggested that it would be undergoing the process of cosmic re-ionization, where space radiation ionizes clouds of gas. As the gas re-ionizes, it also releases a tremendous flare of light, like you see happening in this simulation of the process over a 5 million year timelapse:
Because the flare is so bright, researchers hoped that, even at a distance of 13.1 billion light years, they would still be able to detect it with ALMA. Their hunch payed off: A sweep with ALMA found a telltale flare showing that oxygen is present.
That doesn’t mean it’s anything close to the oxygen we breathe today. For starters, there’s just not that much of it. The amount is fairly tiny—less than one-tenth of the oxygen found in the sun. This has implications for the age of that oxygen.
The small abundance is expected because the universe was still young and had a short history of star formation at that time,” co-author Naoki Yoshida of the University of Tokyo said in a statement. “In fact, our simulation predicted an abundance ten times smaller than the Sun.
On Earth, the presence of oxygen is tied to the presence of life, especially our own. The discovery of oxygen so far away raises questions about the possibility of life out there—either native life forms or perhaps an environment ripe for colonization by us. But this oxygen wouldn’t be something we could breathe.
The detected oxygen is actually doubly-ionized oxygen atoms, and not oxygen molecules which we breathe,” lead researcher Akio Inoue of Japan’s Osaka Sangyo University told Gizmodo. “So, we could not breathe in the 13.1-billion-light-year-away galaxy we observed if we were there.
Although this oxygen couldn’t support life as we know it, Inoue said that this discovery does lead us down a fascinating path: It helps answer the question of where—and when—oxygen formed in our universe in the first place.
These oxygen atoms we found are a kind of the first oxygen ever produced in the Universe, because oxygen did not exist at the Big Bang. In fact, all elements heavier than lithium are produced inside stars and are spread out the Universe when they die,” Inoue told us. “And oxygen and other elements make up dust particles which eventually make up planets and possibly life on them. Therefore, our finding shows the origin of oxygen, one of the most important elements for humans, in this Universe.
Now that the researchers have confirmed the presence of oxygen, their next step is to try and figure out how that oxygen moved away from that galaxy. With that information, they hope untangle even more about just what the presence oxygen means to life in our universe.

  • Self-driving car that uses IBM's AI unveiled

IBM today took the wraps off its first big foray into the world of self-driving cars, not as the driver of them, but as the brain behind making your self-driving journey a little more interesting.
IBM Watson, the company’s AI platform, is powering services in Olli — an electric-powered vehicle that can carry up to 12 people designed by Local Motors, a car maker based out of Arizona that uses newer technologies like 3D printing to bring down the cost of making cars on a low-volume basis.
The cars will start operations first in Washington, DC, before expanding to deployments in Miami-Dade County and Las Vegas later this year. IBM says Miami-Dade County will run a pilot to transport people around Miami using these autonomous vehicles.
Local Motors and IBM, along with Intel, have worked together before, specifically on its Rally Fighter concept car. It looks like Olli might be the first commercial product that has resulted from the partnership.
Olli will be using a special version of Watson aimed at automotive applications and it is not fully powering the car’s self-driving features. Instead it’s aimed at “improving the passenger experience,” according to a statement from IBM.
“IBM technology, including IBM Watson or IBM Watson IoT technology, does not control, navigate or drive Olli. Rather, the IBM Watson capabilities of Olli will help to improve the passenger experience and allow natural interaction with the vehicle,” the company said.
While companies as diverse as tech giants like Google, as well as auto giants like GM, are all laying down bets on self-driving vehicle strategies, it’s interesting that IBM — one of the world’s biggest and most iconic technology companies, and home to an AI platform (Watson) that is extending into so many different areas of life — is not doing more to develop the technology that will power the driving of these vehicles.

Or, at least, it is not publicly discussing anything like that at this point. When we first got wind of this deal back in January, we’d heard it involved IBM working on self-driving technology, although we didn’t hear more beyond that. IBM on a more wider scale has been putting itself in front of the car industry by doing things like partnering with and sponsoring the organization that runs the big auto show in Detroit in January.
Local Motors, another partner of IBM, says it sees Olli as its first step, which could be a clue into what will come next:
"Olli offers a smart, safe and sustainable transportation solution that is long overdue,” John B. Rogers, co-founder of Local Motors, said in a statement. “Olli with Watson acts as our entry into the world of self-driving vehicles, something we’ve been quietly working on with our co-creative community for the past year. We are now ready to accelerate the adoption of this technology and apply it to nearly every vehicle in our current portfolio and those in the very near future. I’m thrilled to see what our open community will do with the latest in advanced vehicle technology.”
There are four Watson APIs that Olli will use: Speech to Text, Natural Language Classifier, Entity Extraction and Text to Speech, and among the functions that the vehicle will be able to perform as a result include analyzing high volumes of transportation data from 30+ sensors on the vehicle.

"Passengers will be able to interact conversationally with Olli while traveling from point A to point B,” IBM says, “discussing topics about how the vehicle works, where they are going, and why Olli is making specific driving decisions.” Other features will be asking Olli for suggestions of restaurants to eat or local landmarks. But not driving itself.

"IBM is excited to work with Local Motors to infuse IBM Watson IoT cognitive computing capabilities into Olli, exploring the art of what’s possible in a world of self-driving vehicles and providing a unique, personalized experience for every passenger while helping to revolutionize the future of transportation for years to come,” said Harriet Green, General Manager, IBM Watson Internet of Things, Commerce & Education, in a statement.

"Improving the sustainability of local transportation networks as part of a wider goal to create more vibrant, livable, sustainable cities within Miami-Dade County, and improve the quality of life for residents is our top priority,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, in a statement. “We must do more to improve transit and mobility in our community and the deployment of autonomous vehicles is a big step in the right direction.”

    • First complex organic molecule discovered in space

A complex organic molecule essential for biology has been discovered for the first time in interstellar space, a finding that may help understand how life originated in the universe.
Like a pair of human hands, certain organic molecules have mirror-image versions of themselves, a chemical property known as chirality.
These molecules are essential for biology and have been found in meteorites on Earth and comets in our Solar System.

However, none has been detected in the vast reaches of interstellar space, until now.
Scientists using highly sensitive radio telescopes have discovered the first complex organic chiral molecule in interstellar space.
The molecule, propylene oxide (CH3CHOCH2), was found near the centre of our Galaxy in an enormous star-forming cloud of dust and gas known as Sagittarius B2 (Sgr B2).

“This is the first molecule detected in interstellar space that has the property of chirality, making it a pioneering leap forward in our understanding of how prebiotic molecules are made in the Universe and the effects they may have on the origins of life,” said Brett McGuire, postdoctoral fellow at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) in the US.
“Propylene oxide is among the most complex and structurally intricate molecules detected so far in space,” said Brandon Carroll, a chemistry graduate student at the California Institute of Technology in the US.
Complex organic molecules form in interstellar clouds like Sgr B2 in several ways. To form complex molecules like propylene oxide astronomers believe thin mantles of ice on dust grains help link small molecules into longer and larger structures.
These molecules can then evaporate from the surface of the grains and further react in the gas of the surrounding cloud.
More than 180 molecules have been detected in space till date. Each molecule gives off a distinctive signature, a series of telltale spikes that appear in the radio spectrum.
Larger and more complex molecules have a correspondingly more complex signature, making them harder to detect.
Every living thing on Earth uses one, and only one handedness of many types of chiral molecules.
This trait, called homochirality, is critical for life and has important implications for many biological structures, including DNA’s double helix.
Scientists do not yet understand how biology came to rely on one handedness and not the other.
“By discovering a chiral molecule in space, we finally have a way to study where and how these molecules form before they find their way into meteorites and comets, and to understand the role they play in the origins of homochirality and life,” McGuire said.
The research was published in the journal Science.

    • ONEPLUS INTRODUCES THE ONEPLUS 3 – IT’S ABOUT TIME

ONEPLUS  INTRODUCES THE ONEPLUS 3 – IT’S ABOUT TIME

Dash Charge Technology, Industry-leading 6 GB RAM, Aluminum Unibody Design Bring a Better Mobile Experience

NEW DELHI – June 14, 2016 – OnePlus, a global mobile technology startup, today released the OnePlus 3, its long-awaited flagship smartphone. Combining the best in technology, design and innovation, this premium device further solidifies OnePlus’ mission to build a better smartphone experience.

The OnePlus 3 offers top-of-the-line performance and inspired design, while keeping the customer at the center. The new phone features Dash Charge fast charging technology, which adds a day of power in only half an hour. It comes with completely unlocked bootloader to give users maximum flexibility. It is also the first OnePlus smartphone to be available for purchase at launch on Amazon.in, OnePlus’ exclusive online partner in India, without an invite from day one.

“We know that the best smartphone is the one that works exactly how you want it to,” said OnePlus Founder and CEO Pete Lau. “The OnePlus 3 delivers that experience. It combines what our customers already love about our products with what they want and expect next. For example, Dash Charge sets a new standard for fast charging technology. It’s a flagship smartphone inspired by – and made for – our fans.”

Vikas Agarwal, General Manager at OnePlus India added, “India has always been a special market for us and we are thrilled to launch the OnePlus 3 for our Indian users simultaneously with the rest of the world. We are confident the phone will bode well with the expectations of the Indian fans, who will now have an easier time experiencing the OnePlus 3 since we have gone ‘invite free’. We are also introducing a line up of attractive accessories and exclusive partner offers to make the user experience even more enriching.”

Dash Charge – A Day’s Power in Half an Hour
The OnePlus 3 utilizes Dash Charge technology, a faster, cooler and safer way to charge a smartphone. Unlike other quick charging technologies, Dash Charge replenishes more than 60% of the 3,000 mAh battery in 30 minutes and continues fast charging even when streaming video or playing energy-intensive games. This is made possible by leveraging a large electric current for stable, consistent charging speeds. In addition, Dash Charge carries more current than other charging solutions, and at lower temperatures, by shifting the power management process from the phone itself to the Dash Charge adapter, so a vast majority of the heat generated while charging never reaches the device. Along with five custom safety measures in place to safeguard the adaptor, cable and phone itself, users can charge their OnePlus 3 as fast as possible without worry.

Smart Capture High-quality Photos and Easy Selfies
The 16 MP rear camera on the OnePlus 3 provides better imaging with incredible detail and clarity. OnePlus’ exclusive suite of imaging technologies, Smart Capture, allows users to effortlessly capture the ideal shot in any environment. Smart Capture functionalities include HD Mode, Auto HDR and Dynamic De-noise, which compares several frames of the same photo and blends them together in post-processing to reduce noise. The OnePlus 3 also includes our new Smile Capture feature, allowing you to take a photo using the front-facing 8 MP camera simply by smiling – a seamless solution for selfies.

Dual-stabilization technologies – Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) – help reduce blur, ensuring photos come out as planned. For the most discerning photography enthusiast, the robust manual mode offers the benefits of a DSLR, including support of RAW image files, in one lightweight device.

Premium Design – Elegantly Curved Aluminum Unibody
The design of the OnePlus 3 takes aesthetics, quality and usability to a new level. The all-metal unibody, carved from a single slab of space-grade aluminum alloy, makes for a seamless, resilient build, while the balance of soft curves against sharp lines creates a striking impression and comfortable grip. At 7.3 mm, the OnePlus 3 is one of the thinnest flagships ever. The stunning 5.5-inch 1080p Optic AMOLED display with one of the world’s thinnest bezels produces colors that are more vivid and true-to-life than ever before even in bright sunlight, thanks to a dual-polarizing layer.

Available in two color variants – Graphite and Soft Gold – the OnePlus 3 is an inspiring device to hold.

      Fast, Powerful, Customizable
The OnePlus 3 is designed to deliver maximum performance. Packing the new quad-core Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 820 processor (up to 2.2 GHz), the OnePlus 3 performs tasks 35% faster than the OnePlus 2 and features a 40% boost in graphical power – all at a fraction of the power consumption.

The device also sets a new standard in smartphone memory. The OnePlus 3 boasts 6 GB of LPDDR4 RAM, allowing for next-level multitasking without delay or lag and ensuring it can handle the most demanding apps. The OnePlus 3 also features an improved, more durable ceramic fingerprint sensor that improves accuracy with increased use. Offering the ability to unlock the device in under 0.3 seconds, even from a sleeping screen, users can access their phone faster and more accurately.

OnePlus’ custom operating system, OxygenOS, offers a fast, clean, customizable and bloat-free operating system based on Android Marshmallow. With off-screen gestures and customizable capacitive hardware and software buttons built in, the OnePlus 3 allows customers to personalize their smartphone experience.

The OnePlus 3 comes with dual nano SIM card support, allowing users to connect to different networks with ease. Our Indian fans will get complimentary subscription of 12 months of ad-free Saavn Pro. In addition to that, through OnePlus’ partnership with Idea Cellular our Indian fans will be able to enjoy ‘double data’ for 12 months. A third exciting offer awaits OnePlus fans wherein they will be able to avail 12 months of accidental damage coverage through the ‘OnePlus Care app’ powered by Servify.

OnePlus’ partners have come forth in wishing the OnePlus 3 success:

“Amazon.in has become the marketplace of choice for millions of customers who want to explore and buy a range of mobile devices across marquee brands. We are very happy to offer our customers across India an exclusive access to the new OnePlus 3 and provide them with a delightful shopping experience,” said Noor Patel, Director Category Management, Amazon India

“We are very excited to collaborate with OnePlus on their latest flagship device, the OnePlus 3, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor,” said Sunil Lalvani, Vice President and President, Qualcomm India. “The OnePlus 3 takes advantage of the heterogeneous computing capabilities that are inherent to Snapdragon 820, providing an all-around outstanding experience for users.”

Elaborating on partnering with OnePlus, Mahesh Narayanan, Global COO, Saavn, added, "This strategic partnership between OnePlus and Saavn offers an integrated experience that combines the best technology, music and original audio content for OnePlus 3 and Saavn Pro users in India. The OnePlus 3 is a beautifully-designed, premium smartphone that makes a perfect pair with Saavn Pro's ad-free, high-quality streaming experience. There is a large overlap between OnePlus users and Saavn listeners, and this association will help us engage with that audience in a meaningful way."

      Pricing & Availability
The Graphite variant of the OnePlus 3 will be available exclusively on Amazon.in, 12:30am onwards starting June 15 for INR 27,999/- whereas the Soft Gold variant will be launched in the near future. Additionally, fans can see for themselves how the OnePlus 3 is creating a better smartphone experience by visiting one of three pop-up stores located at The Collective @ New Delhi (June 15), The Collective @ Mumbai (June 17) and Indelust @ Bangalore (June 18).
