  • Eyewatch, An Emergency Safety App, For All Age Group

    Eyewatch, an emergency alert application that has been designed for security of the citizens in India. Developed by Indian Eye Security Pvt. Ltd. With the inputs from security experts from USA, UK, France, Israel, and India. This app has already crosses half a million downloads.


    At the click of a button, immediately the system informs guardians with the exact Audio/Video displaying the details of the emergency & location with the help of GPS and network triangulation on the “Guardians Dashboard”. Alerts can be viewed by guardians via smart phone or computer.

    This is the only application in the world today, which when activated records a 60 second pre-alert audio which helps the guardians to hear exactly what is causing the perceived threat. A 20 second video is sent which provides environmental details.

    It has different alert types so as to ensure the right kind of help can be provided at the right time. The broad categories are A) personal alert, where only known people (ERC’s) are contacted so as to avoid embarrassment or exposure in personal situations. B) travel alert, where you may additionally contact Car breakdown services, etc. C) Security alert where the police are also intimated about the emergency so that they may respond and provide immediate assistance and lastly D) medical alert where your doctor or primary healthcare provider may be contacted.

    The app requires the user to add details of all the Emergency Response Contacts along with a family doctor’s information, medical information, employer’s details and insurance details for effective use.

    The alert can also be activated by pushing the power button 4 times or with the help of an accelerometer which measures the motion of the phone.(These need to be enabled in the settings menu first) The app also provides a 6 second countdown to deactivate the alert therefore reducing false alarms when the accelerometer trigger is involved.

    After Extensive testing by the Army Signals Corps, The app was launched by in 2012 by the then army Chief  General V. K. Singh for the Indian Army Veterans and their families.  

    Having won the ‘Best Safety App’ in 2015 Eyewatch currently has a preinstallation Agreement with 2 Indian Mobile Manufacturers. This app is already available on Google PlayStore, iTunes, Blackberry, Microsoft and Symbian.

    Various Police Commissionerates in India, namely Gurgaon (Haryana), Kolkata (West Bengal), Amravati (Maharashtra), Nashik (Maharashtra), Nagpur (Maharashtra), Bagalkot (Maharashtra), Belgaum (Karnataka), State of Goa, State of Uttar Pradesh ‘Shakti 1090’ have successfully launched the Eyewatch police application.

  • Get Protected From Cyber Attack

    After almost four years of debate, the European Union passed the General Data Protection Regulation, with the objective to strengthen and unify data protection for individuals within the EU and deal with exporting personal data outside the region.

    But what difference - if any - will it make specifically in India?

    "It's tough, as there is no holistic legal framework/regulator in the form of data protection authority, data quality and proportionality, data transparency, etc.., which addresses and covers data protection issues in accordance with the principles of the EU Directive, OECD Guidelines or Safe Harbor Principles," says Krishnan , chief risk officer, Reliance Life Insurance Company Ltd.

    “Research Company Gartner predicts there will be 6.8 billion connected devices in use in 2016, a 30 percent increase over 2015. By 2020, that number will jump to more than 20 billion connected devices, predicts Gartner. Put another way, for every human being on the planet, there will be between two and three connected devices.”

    Responding forcefully to attempted security breaches is often very difficult for a variety of reasons:
    ¡  Identifying attackers is difficult
    ¡  The sheer number of attempted attacks is so large that organisations cannot spend time pursuing each attacker
    ¡  Law enforcement officers are often unfamiliar with information technology, and so lack the skills and interest in pursuing attackers.
    ¡  Budgetary constraints

    National Cyber Security Policy 
          A policy framework by Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY). 
    ¡        Aims at protecting the public and private infrastructure from cyber attacks. 
           Intends to safeguard "information, such as personal information (of web users), financial and banking information and sovereign data". 

    Krishnan suggests that the government appoint a regulatory body to govern data confidentiality across public, private and individual parties.
    A fine balance between what the consumer wants and what the country needs is most essential, as it would ensure the policy framework is transparent and guidelines are followed.

    Henceforth, "No new regulation is required for India regarding data protection or data breach disclosure," he says. "The government needs only revisit its existing IT Act 2008 and impress data protection obligations upon Indian companies and find a way to help them adhere to them."
  • WhatsApp Gold: New Trap Of Criminals

    No sooner did any service or technology becomes popular, cyber criminals try to take advantage it. WhatsApp is once again falling in trap to such criminals. Earlier criminals had used WhatsApp Plus, this time they are using WhatsApp Gold. 
                                                 
    In reality their is nothing called as WhatsApp Plus or WhatsApp Gold. Criminals main aim is to steal private data of users, including their private images, videos and chat.
    It has been reported that many WhatsApp users are receiving messages asking them to upgrade their existing WhatsApp to an exclusive version of the app called WhatsApp Gold. Link to download the app is already embedded in the message, message claims that this is exclusive version which was earlier available only to celebrities. It also promises them new features like free calling, new themes, ability to send bulk pictures, new emojis, extended security measures and  more customising options.
    If a user downloads the app, then files of app infects the phone with a malware that could steal user data, track user activities and even get personal details stored in other apps on the phone.
    Earlier, criminals used WhatsApp Plus for the scam. As soon as WhatsApp learnt about it they started scanning for it on the phone and if any user is found to have WhatsApp Plus on his device, they bans the user from the chat network and requests them to uninstall this unauthorised version. They suggests users to wait for 24 hours before downloading the original version from the Google Play store and also to clean all files of previous version.
    In fact, WhatsApp advises its users that it will never send them a text message asking them to upgrade or download another app. The company reportedly says that it would reach its users over official points of contact like email but because of many non technical users such criminals get success in their plans. 
    The best way to avoid from falling prey to any such scam is to avoid or delete any such message asking you to download any app from non official source. The app you download should only come from Google Play Store or App Store. If you have doubt about any app then its better you don't install it.

    Finally Yesterday full-length trailer for most-awaited biographic Snowden has finally arrived. This Movie is based on the real life story of Edward Snowden, Who a son of a family steeped in military and civil service.Snowden was in Army Reserve as a Special Forces candidate, worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, and acted as a contractor for the U.S. federal government. 



    Stone’s focus in Snowden, however, is directed toward the controversial figure’s theft and disclosure of classified National Security Agency information.The Movie is set to hit  in theaters on September 16th and , Snowden starters Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, and Nicolas Cage.

    The movie, which will be in theaters September 16, follows the career of real-life Snowden, 32, who leaked troves of documents in 2013 showing the U.S. government spies on its own citizens through secret surveillance programs.Edward Snowden risked his own life to challenge the complacency of shadowy government bureaucrats, pervy computer programmers.

    What we get in trailer ?

    Snowden leaked the documents after quitting his job as a contractor for the National Security Agency and preemptively fleeing to Hong Kong. He subsequently fled to Russia, where he is currently living in an undisclosed location while seeking asylum in other countries.



    The trailer, released Wednesday, starts off with Snowden's failed Special Forces application and shows him turning to intelligence work, where he discovers infuriating overreach on behalf of federal intelligence agencies. Prior to his admission to the Central Intelligence Agency, the movie's Snowden exhibits his extraordinary intelligence in what the A.V. Club called 'an obligatory “completing a four hour test in minutes” scene.'



    Gordon-Levitt's character is introduced to his new mission by an official, played by Cage, who urges him to 'Find the terrorists... In the internet haystack.' But instead of terrorists, the movie's Snowden finds himself looking at authentic sex scenes secretly recorded in American bedrooms, alongside a young colleague who remarks with voyeuristic glee that the government is capable of spying on people across 'the whole kingdom.' 

    A few moments later, Gordon-Levitt's character appears struck by a terrifying insight as he is in bed with his girlfriend, portrayed by 'Divergent' star Shailene Woodley, and gazes into the prying eye of his own webcam. And so, the movie's protagonist does what any conscientious hero would do - he downloads incriminating data onto a micro memory card, hides it in a specially modified Rubik's cube, and uses the toy to escape with the information.



    It is unclear how close to the truth this depiction is - 2013 reports claimed Snowden smuggled the information on ordinary thumb drives - but a Rubik's cube did play a role in the real-life Snowden saga.

  • SkullConduct: Skull-Based Authentication System

    Researchers at the University of Stuttgart, the University of Saarland and the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Germany have developed a new biometric authentication system called 'SkullConduct'. SkullConduct works by analyzing skull vibrations in reaction to an ultrasonic signal. The system plays a one-second long audio clip into the user's head and analyzes the signal after it's traveled through the skull. The team found that the system successfully identified the subjects 97% of the times.

    SkullConduct uses the bone conduction speaker and microphone readily integrated into the eyewear computer and analyses the characteristic frequency response of an audio signal sent through the user’s skull.

    All mobile companies are now trying to integrate fingerprint readers and iris scanners in their devices, for authenticating people. The next big thing in biometrics might lie under our skin. Researchers are working on SkullConduct, an authentication system that uses a bone conduction speaker and mic on your head to identify you.

    SkullConduct works with modified Google Glass. It works by playing a one-second long audio clip through its speaker and then captures the sound after it’s traveled through the user’s skull. It analyzes the unique frequency to identify the wearer. The team found that their system correctly identified its test subjects 97 percent of the time. 

    So yes, there’s a still a way to go before it works perfectly.There are also some limitations to the system: 
    • It may not work properly if there’s enough background noise present to interfere with the audio. 
    • Users’ weight gain may change the feedback the mic receives, leaving the user locked out of their device.
    This technology is still in its development phase, so it is likely to improve with time. This technology can be used at very large scale for security purpose in future.
  • FBI Unlocks iPhone Without Apple

    Soon, Apple users might have to face big security threat. As second time FBI has unlocked iPhone without Apple's assistance. Firstly, iPhone discovered in connection with the San Bernardino terror attacks was unlocked last month. Now, FBI has managed to crack a second device – this time, it was an iPhone 5S used by a drug dealer in New York. 


    Now FBI has drop the case, which involved demanding Apple’s help to open an iPhone used by Syed Rizwan Farook, a gunman in the December shooting in San Bernardino terror attack. The case had become increasingly contentious as Apple refused to help the authorities, inciting a debate about whether privacy or security was more important.

    However, unlike the San Bernardino incident in which the agency had to spend over a million dollars to crack the device, the government said in a court filing that it had obtained a passcode that it used to unlock the iPhone in the Brooklyn case. Due to which FBI has withdrew its request for a court order to get Apple’s assistance in the matter.

    It’s worth noting that FBI didn't specify "an individual" from which they got passcode. There are still more than 1,000 iPhones in police custody that law enforcement can’t break into US has demanded Apple’s help in at least 10 more cases to break into iOS devices.

    While the FBI may indeed have been able to gain access to the data on two iPhones this year, it’s not likely that it will let Apple off the hook in the ongoing legal battle over people’s right to privacy and the company’s duty to grant backdoor access to its devices.

    In a statement issued to Reuters, Justice Department spokeswoman Emily Pierce said that the cases have “never been about setting a court precedent; they are about law enforcement’s ability and need to access evidence on devices pursuant to lawful court orders and search warrants.”

    Yet law enforcement’s ability to now unlock an iPhone through an alternative method raises new security threats. The development can also creates new conflicts between the government and Apple about the method used to open the device and whether that technique will be disclosed. Lawyers for Apple have previously said the company would want to know the procedure used to crack open the smartphone.

    Get an Antivirus App

While patterns may be easy to unlock repeatedly, pins and passwords offer far greater security. You can double your security by using third party security apps which offer changing pins. They protect you even when you unlock your phone in front of somebody.
    Another alternative would be to get your hands on a phone with a fingerprint scanner. Smartphones with such security features are difficult to fool and ordinary people will stand little chance if they attempt to pry into your personal files.

    Jailbreaking or Rooting

    Some of you might not understand terms such as jailbreaking or rooting. To describe these terms simply, Jailbreaking or Rooting is the process of gaining advanced access to your device’s software and hardware via an OS vulnerability. This allows you to increase your phones functionality, customizability and gives you access to a realm of developer mods.

    However, it’s not all that great. With such advanced access, you risk your device’s security. Hackers can make use of any flaws in your device security and take control of your device in a manner which is not possible otherwise.   • Smartphone Like Handgun

     A company from Minnesota called as Ideal Conceal has created a handgun designed to look like a smartphone.

    The company’s website reads,“Smartphones are everywhere, so your new pistol will easily blend in with today’s environment. In its locked position it will be virtually undetectable because it hides in plain sight".


    It is set to release sometime in mid-2016, the pistol is a double-barreled .380 caliber. Company is planning to sell it for $395 and its developer, one Kirk Kjellberg, claims that they’ve already received upwards of 2,500 emails from interested buyers.

    When the gun is in its smartphone camouflage, it can't be fired accidently.

    The product description on site is, "The ground breaking Ideal Conceal is a carefully engineered double-barreled .380 caliber people can safely carry in their purse or clipped to their side. Ingeniously designed to resemble a smartphone, yet with one click of the safety it opens and is ready to fire. The product was designed with safety as a priority. A brand everyone can trust, a piece they can rely on, over and over".

    Nonetheless, the idea of people walking around with firearms disguised as smartphones has law enforcement officials worried.

    Addressing the issue head on, Bill Johnson of the National Association of Police Organizations said the following: “In general, the concept of any kind of weapon that’s disguised, so that it’s not apparent that it’s a weapon, would be cause for concern.”

    Similarly, Andrew Patrick, Deputy Communications Director at the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, issued the following statement to the DailyMail: “What’s disturbing is that this looks like a real smartphone. There are countless stories of children playing with toy guns who were shot, because it was mistaken for the real thing.”

    Kai Cao and Anil Jain, researchers from Michigan State University, have devised a way to trick two Android phones with fingerprint locks into opening by using two simple items: printer ink and paper.

    By scanning a fingerprint at 300dpi and printing it on an inkjet printer, Cao and Jain were able to unlock both a Samsung Galaxy S6 and Huawei Honor 7 with little effort.


    Although they use a special kind of paper (AgIC paper) and ink (conductive silver ink), both are widely available online.

    Cao and Jain have only tested this on two smartphones, but everything from iPhones to home security systems use very similar fingerprint scanning technology.

    So, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that someone could James Bond you out of your life savings if, like many of us, your bank allows you to sign in via your phone’s fingerprint scanner. So, become aware and develop ways to prevent from such security attack.

  • How to Choose Better Password

    There's always debate online about which kinds of passwords are really the most secure, but one universal truth always seems to be that you should change your passwords often. The reasoning behind that is presumably if someone gains access to your account they won't be able to get into it for long. So you're effectively constantly changing it to keep those pesky wannabe hackers guessing.

    But apparently the IT department's obsession with changing up our passwords could be all wrong. According to FTC Chief Technologist and Carnegie Mellon computer science professor Lorrie Cranor, research suggests that if you have to change your password all the time you'll put much less effort into picking a secure one.


    She explains her findings from one particular study:
        “[People] tended to create passwords that followed predictable patterns, called ‘transformations,’ such as incrementing a number, changing a letter to similar-looking symbol (for example changing an S to a $), adding or deleting a special character (for example, going from three exclamation points at the end of a password to two), or switching the order of digits or special characters (for example moving the numbers to the beginning instead of the end).”

    Sound familiar? Exactly. That's why changing your password a lot just isn't smart when it comes to security. In fact, Cranor suggests that those who really want to hack into accounts can do so quite easily via offline attacks that guess a large number of passwords. So your constant changing isn't really going to slow them down that much anyway.

    A strong password is your first line of defense against intruders and imposters.

    Never give out your password to anyone.*
    Never give it to friends, even if they’re really good friends. A friend can – maybe even accidentally – pass your password along to others or even become an ex-friend and abuse it.

    Don’t just use one password. It’s possible that someone working at a site where you use that password could pass it on or use it to break into your accounts at other sites.

    Create passwords that are easy to remember but hard for others to guess.
    When possible, use a phrase such as “I started 7th grade at Lincoln Middle School in 2004” and use the initial of each word like this: “Is7gaLMSi#2004.” And make them at least a little different (by adding a couple of unique letters) for each site. On some sites you might even be able to type in the entire phrase.

    Make the password at least 8 characters long. The longer the better. Longer passwords are harder for thieves to crack.

    Include numbers, capital letters and symbols. Consider using a $ instead of an S or a 1 instead of an L, or including an & or % – but note that $1ngle is NOT a good password. Password thieves are onto this. But Mf$J1ravng (short for “My friend Sam Jones is really a very nice guy) is an excellent password.

    Don’t use dictionary words:  If it’s in the dictionary, there is a chance someone will guess it. There’s even software that criminals use that can guess words used in dictionaries.

    Don’t post it in plain sight: This might seem obvious but studies have found that a lot of people post their password on their monitor with a sticky note. Bad idea.  If you must write it down, hide the note somewhere where no one can find it.

    Consider using a password manager.
    Programs or Web services like RoboForm (Windows only) or Lastpass (Windows and Mac) let you create a different very strong password for each of your sites. But you only have to remember the one password to access the program or secure site that stores your passwords for you.

    Consider using multi-factor authentication.
    Many services offer an option to verify your identity if someone logs on to your account from an unrecognized device. The typical method is to send a text or other type of message to a mobile device registered to you with a code you need to type in to verity it’s really you.  In most cases, you will not be required to use this code when logging on from a known device such as your own computer, tablet or phone.

    Don’t fall for “phishing” attacks.
    Be very careful before clicking on a link (even if it appears to be from a legitimate site) asking you to log in, change your password or provide any other personal information. It might be legit or it might be a “phishing” scam where the information you enter goes to a hacker. When in doubt, log on manually by typing what you know to be the site’s URL into your browser window.

    Make sure your devices are secure.
    The best password in the world might not do you any good if someone is looking over your shoulder while you type or if you forget to log out on a cybercafe computer. Malicious software, including “keyboard loggers” that record all of your keystrokes, has been used to steal passwords and other information. To increase security, make sure you’re using up-to-date anti-malware software and that your operating system is up-to-date.

    Use a “password” or fingerprints for your phone too.
    Most phones can be locked so that the only way to use them is to type in a code, typically a string of numbers or maybe a pattern you draw on the screen. Some new phones allow you to register fingerprints, which are quite secure. Sometimes when people with bad intentions find unlocked phones, they use them to steal the owners’ information, make a lot of calls, or send texts that look like they’re coming from the owner. Someone posing as you could send texts that make it look like you’re bullying or harassing someone in your address book with inappropriate images or words.

    * Some parents ask their kids to share their passwords with them.
    This might be OK with young children, but you might want to respect your teen’s privacy and not ask. Also, if you do ask your children for their passwords, make sure they understand that this is a rare exception to the “do not share password” rule.


  • 10 Worst Password That Everyone Should Avoid Using

    Technology may be rapidly evolving toward the future, but the way most of us secure it sure isn't. For the fifth year in a row, cyber security firm SplashData has released a compilation of the past year's worst passwords, many of which also happen to be the year's most popular passwords.


    Some of the top winners for worst passwords of 2015 appeared on the list the previous year as well -- and likely have since the tech industry first started requiring passwords for access to things in general.

    The security company (which, incidentally, offers secure password management services) gathered up a series of password dumps from the year, mostly from hacked sites, and sorted the data to tally up the most common user attempts at securing their accounts.

    Well, "attempts" is a little generous. Here are the top 10 most common (and all equally terrible) passwords from SplashData:
    1. "123456"
    2. "password"
    3. "12345678"
    4. "qwerty"
    5. "12345"
    6. "123456789"
    7. "football"
    8. "1234"
    9. "1234567"
    10. "baseball"


    Most of these passwords have stayed in the top 10 since last year. The fifth-place password has actually dropped two places since 2014.

    A few other gems from the 25 most popular, and worst, passwords from 2015: "111111" gained popularity, while the full row of numbers in order, "1234567890," placed in the top 25 for the first time ever. 

    Interestingly some other new, but still terrible, passwords in the top 25 seem to reflect the cultural zeitgeist of 2015 -- at least a little more than the passwords conjured using the oh-so-original, indecipherable and surely un-hackable method of "pressing down a series of keyboard keys, in order, from left to right."

    Popping up in the 25 most popular (and still terrible) passwords for the first time: "princess," "solo," and "starwars."

    "We have seen an effort by many people to be more secure by adding characters to passwords, but if these longer passwords are based on simple patterns they will put you in just as much risk of having your identity stolen by hackers," said Morgan Slain, CEO of SplashData. "As we see on the list, using common sports and pop culture terms is also a bad idea. We hope that with more publicity about how risky it is to use weak passwords, more people will take steps to strengthen their passwords and, most importantly, use different passwords for different websites."
  • India is under increasing threat of cyber criminals : Kaspersky

    India is increasingly on the radar of cybercriminals from countries like China, Russia and the US, who are using advanced persistent threat (APT) attacks to steal data from consumers and enterprises, security software firm Kaspersky said today.



    APT refers to a format where the attacker gains access to a network/device and stays there undetected for a long period of time. The motive of the attack is to steal data and there is damage over a longer term to the organisation/user.

    "APT attacks are on the rise globally and those affecting India are also growing. These attacks are originating from China, the US and Russia among other countries. A major chunk of the attacks like Equation, Turla, Darkhotel, Regin, Cloud Atlas infected India as well," Kaspersky Lab Deputy Director Global Research and Analysis Team Sergey Novikov told reporters here. He added that while there were three APT announcements in 2012, the number grew to seven in 2013, 11 in 2014 and 10 in the first half of 2015.

    "As more and more devices get connected to the Internet, the level of sophistication of these attacks is also on the rise," he said. Novikov said the line of distinction between state-sponsored cyber attacks and those by criminal gangs is diminishing as similar techniques often get used. "However, it is difficult to establish whether they are working together," he added.

    Stuxnet is a example of an APT attack. The malicious worm is believed to have been a jointly built American-Israeli cyber weapon to sabotage Iran's nuclear programme. Rainer Bock, Head of Strategic Projects at the company said one could see more complex attacks going ahead, including state-sponsored ones. "Also, the vectors of attacks will evolve. From attacking devices, cybercriminals are now looking at networks and communication channels like WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G," he added. Targets of these attacks are also evolving as newer devices like ATM and PoS machines, smart cities and connected cars are now on the radar, he said. 
  • Why government and technology companies can't agree on encryption of user data?

    Your phone is getting better and better at protecting your privacy. But Uncle Sam isn't totally comfortable with that, because it's also complicating the work of tracking criminals and potential national-security threats.For decades, tech companies have steadily expanded the use of encryption — a data-scrambling technology that shields information from prying eyes, whether it's sent over the Internet or stored on phones and computers.


     For almost as long, police and intelligence agencies have sought to poke holes in the security technology, which can thwart investigators even when they have a legal warrant for, say, possibly incriminating text messages stored on a phone.



    The authorities haven't fared well; strong encryption now keeps strangers out of everything from your iMessages to app data stored on the latest Android phones. But in the wake of the Paris attacks, US officials are again pushing for limits on encryption, even though there's still no evidence the extremists used it to safeguard their communications.While various experts are exploring ways of resolving the impasse, none are making much headway. For now, the status quo favors civil libertarians and the tech industry, although that could change quickly — for instance, should another attack lead to mass US casualties. Such a scenario could stampede Congress into passing hasty and potentially counterproductive restrictions on encryption."

    There are completely reasonable concerns on both sides," said Yeshiva University law professor Deborah Pearlstein. The aftermath of an attack, however, "is the least practical time to have a rational discussion about these issues."Encryption plays a little heralded, yet crucial role in the modern economy and daily life. It protects everything from corporate secrets to the credit-card numbers of online shoppers to the communications of democracy advocates fighting totalitarian regimes.At the same time, recent decisions by Apple and Google to encrypt smartphone data by default have rankled law enforcement officials, who complain of growing difficulty in getting access to the data they feel they need to build criminal cases and prevent attacks. For months, the Obama administration — which has steered away from legislative restrictions on encryption — has been in talks with technology companies to brainstorm ways of giving investigators legal access to encrypted information.But technology experts and their allies say there's no way to grant law enforcement such access without making everyone more vulnerable to cybercriminals and identity thieves. 

    "It would put American bank accounts and their health records, and their phones, at a huge risk to hackers and foreign criminals and spies, while at the same time doing little or nothing to stop terrorists," Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said in an interview Monday.Lawmakers on the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence remain on what they call an "exploratory" search for options that might expand access for law enforcement, although they're not necessarily looking at new legislation.The FBI and police have other options even if they can't read encrypted files and messages. So-called metadata — basically, a record of everyone an individual contacts via phone, email or text message — isn't encrypted, and service providers can make it available when served with subpoenas. Data stored on remote computers in the cloud — for instance, on Apple's iCloud service or Google's Drive — is also often available to investigators with search warrants. (Apple and Google encrypt that data, but also hold the keys.)

    Some security experts suggest that should be enough. Michael Moore, chief technology officer and co-founder of the Baltimore, Maryland-based data security firm Terbium Labs, noted that police have managed to take down online criminals even without bypassing encryption. He pointed to the 2013 take down of Silk Road, a massive online drug bazaar that operated on the "dark Web," essentially the underworld of the Internet."The way they figured that out was through good old-fashioned police work, not by breaking cryptography," Moore said. "I don't think there's a shortcut to good police work in that regard."Others argue that the very notion of "compromise" makes no sense where encryption is concerned. "Encryption fundamentally is about math," said Mike McNerney, a fellow on the Truman National Security Project and a former cyber policy adviser to the Secretary of Defense.

     "How do you compromise on math?" He called the idea of backdoors "silly."Some in law enforcement have compromise ideas of their own. The Manhattan District Attorney's office, for instance, recently called for a federal law that would require smartphone companies to sell phones they could unlock for government searches — in essence, forcing them to hold the keys to user data.In a report on the subject, the office called its suggestion a "limited proposal" that would only apply to data stored on smartphones and restrict searches to devices that authorities had already seized. Privacy advocates and tech companies aren't sold, saying it would weaken security for phones that are already too vulnerable to attack

    .Marcus Thomas, the chief technology officer at Subsentio and former assistant director of the FBI's operational technology division, argued that it's too late to turn back the clock on strong encryption, putting law enforcement in a "race against time" to obtain investigatory data whenever and wherever it can. But he urged security experts to find ways to help out investigators as they design next-generation encryption systems.The idea of allowing law enforcement secure access to encrypted information doesn't faze Nate Cardozo, a staff attorney for the San Francisco-based Electronic Frontier Foundation — provided a warrant is involved. Unfortunately, he says, cryptographers agree that the prospect is a "pure fantasy."
  • GAIL to use drones, satellite mapping to bolster security

    GAIL (India) Ltd would use drones and satellite imagery to map and monitor its pipeline network while expanding its Sahyogi (partner) scheme to detect/prevent encroachment and terror attack threats, a senior official said.

    "In 10-15 days, we will issue a tender for drones to monitor our 200-km long pipeline in Madhya Pradesh's Chambal area," Ashutosh Karnatak, director (projects), told IANS.

    The senior official of India's largest natural gas pipeline operator was here to address a three-day Corcon 2015, an international conference on corrosion, that concluded recently.

    Karnatak said once successful, the drone experiment would be implemented in other parts of the country.

    He said satellite imagery of GAIL's pipeline network would also be obtained for effective monitoring.

    The company's pipeline network is already monitored through closed-circuit cameras at a cost of around Rs 25 crore.

    As for threat of terror attacks, Karnatak said the company's Sahyogi scheme would also act as a safeguard against terror attacks, apart from detecting and preventing encroachment.

    "We will soon roll out Sahyogi scheme across the country. Our pipes are laid along several villages. Under the Sahyogi scheme, villagers concerned are enlisted to inform us about encroachment along the pipelines," Karnatak said.

    Currently, the scheme has been implemented in Andhra Pradesh.

    "We remove the encroachment with police help. Petty shops or small eateries on our land are relocated after payment of a small compensation," he said.

    "In case encroachment cannot be removed in such manner, we safeguard ourselves through a legal process, making it clear that encroachers can't claim compensation in case of any untoward incidents," the GAIL official added.

    There are around 500 encroachments on GAIL land at present, but 30 encroachments at different places have already been removed.

    The company has built a large network of natural gas pipelines covering more than 10,900 km, apart from two liquefied petroleum gas pipelines with a total length of 2,040 km.

    About laying the pipelines along the highways where security monitoring would be better compared with pipes criss-crossing through farmland, he said: "The company is not averse to laying pipelines along the highways."

    "Overseas, separate ducts are provided along the highways for gas pipelines. We have to see the safety aspects as well, while deciding on pipelines along the highways," Karnatak said.

    The Tamil Nadu government and state farmers had opposed the company's plan to lay Kochi-Mangalore natural gas pipeline through farmland in seven districts of Tamil Nadu. The state government maintained that GAIL could lay pipeline along the national highways and not through farmland.

    "Let the Tamil Nadu government decide the route where the pipelines are to be laid," Karnatak said.

    With GAIL pipelines having a lifespan of 25 years, the company has hired external experts for monitoring their internal and external corrosion.

    In June 2014, an explosion in GAIL pipeline in Andhra Pradesh due to internal corrosion killed 29 persons.

    He said the quality of gas was monitored to prevent internal corrosion in pipelines.

    As to the new projects, Karnatak said the first phase of the Rs 10,000 crore Jagadishpur-Haldia pipeline has begun. The project is expected to be completed by December 2018.
