Facebook Messenger is getting a big feature today. The update, which is being rolled out globally today, will bring group calling to the instant messaging app. The service will be available for free on Android and iOS apps.
The procedure to start a group voice call is pretty simple. You just need to open the group chat and click on the call button. The app will ask you to select the group members you would like to call, and once that’s done, all selected people will get the call notification simultaneously.
If someone couldn’t receive the initial call, but the call is still in progress, the person can join in later by tapping the phone icon in the group chat. The caller can see the active participants of the call and ping anyone who has not joined or got disconnected.
There’s a limit of 50 active participants in one group call, which is more than enough. Group calling isn’t a common feature amongst Messenger’s competitors and there are only a few popular services which offer this feature.
Facebook started offering VOIP calling back in 2013 and released the feature for all Facebook users in April 2014. Messenger was used for 10 percent of global calls in 2015 and this new group calling feature puts it close to any regular calling service available over GSM networks. A Messenger spokesperson said “There are situations where typing isn’t enough and when people prefer talking to one another.”
Group video calling, however, is still not here yet. It is expected to be released eventually and Facebook executives have confirmed it as well.
Messenger aims to completely replace the regular phone number one day and be used as the go to method of communication. Strangers can talk on Facebook since last year as well.
However, Messenger does hold an added functionality. While blocking regular phone numbers is difficult or costs money, blocking some stranger on Facebook is simple and free. Harassing someone is very difficult on Facebook if you know the options available to you.
There is still some way to go before Messenger’s group calling can overtake Skype as the professional method for long-distance video communication. Video calling and auto-mute for group conversations would definitely put it up there with Skype. The rise of the platform is definitely unquestionable as Facebook has over 1.5 billion users and Messenger has 900 million users. These numbers are Messenger’s greatest strength over its competitors as well.
Facebook has been bringing new features to its Messenger App for quite a while now. Since the announcement of Messenger as an app platform, the app itself has also seen many more upgrades. The update brings usernames, codes and links to the popular messaging app.
Usernames
Messenger will now allow users to create personal usernames on the service. These usernames can then be used to add people more easily. Anyone can be simply make note of someone’s username and add them instead of searching for names, going through a huge number of people with similar names.

Even Facebook Pages will soon have their own usernames and become contactable using @username to find them.
Codes
In addition to usernames, there is a new feature called Messenger Codes. It is not too different from what’s available on Snapchat. Codes are circular, but similar to QR codes, and can be embedded into emails, websites, business cards etc. It is safer to share your codes rather than giving out your phone number or email address. Codes are unique to each account so there’s no privacy risk.

If a group of people are hanging out or working together, they can share their Messenger codes to add each other on the messaging service.
Links
Every user will now get a unique URL which will be based on their username. If you have a custom URL for your Facebook account, that will work too. The URL link isn’t any different from common ones and you can share it online with anyone on any platform. Visiting the link brings you straight to the chat.
The link comes in this format ‘m.me/ProPakistani’. Use of a username makes it easy for friends to find you as well. Business users will find the new feature particularly useful as customers will be able to interact using their page’s usernames to contact them.

Messenger’s Progress
Facebook announced one more bit of information about its messenger app. Messenger now boasts 900 million users. That’s about the same number of users which actively use the social network, i.e. 934 million. Messenger continues to gain popularity as it closes in on the world’s most popular messaging app, WhatsApp (another Facebook owned messaging app).
WhatsApp keeps introducing new features every week to make the world’s most popular messenger even more popular. Today they have brought yet another very useful feature for Android users, Quick Reply.
Well, you can now reply to the new messages directly from the Notification area, without even leaving your current screen or app.
WhatsApp Quick Reply
To get this Quick Reply feature, you must be running WhatsApp Beta version 2.12.561 which can be download via PlayStore. Note, you require ‘Latest Beta Version’ which will be available only if you have subscribed for the Beta Program. Which also means, this version is not available either on official whatsapp website, not even on PlayStore if you are note Beta tester.
WhatsApp Quick Reply works just like the Pop-up notification, that is, you can reply to the messages in notification from any screen, including the clock screen. But unlike Pop-up feature, there is no option to turn off the Quick reply from settings.

New Yahoo Messenger apps were released smartphones or tablets powered by Apple or Android software, as were versions of the service tailored for use on the Web or on desktop computers.
"Yahoo decided it was time to build a ground-up rewrite of the platform that was completely modern and prepares Yahoo to ship really disruptive innovative features," Yahoo Messenger senior director of product management, Austin Shoemaker, said while giving AFP a look at the platform.
