  • SkullConduct: Skull-Based Authentication System

    Researchers at the University of Stuttgart, the University of Saarland and the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Germany have developed a new biometric authentication system called 'SkullConduct'. SkullConduct works by analyzing skull vibrations in reaction to an ultrasonic signal. The system plays a one-second long audio clip into the user's head and analyzes the signal after it's traveled through the skull. The team found that the system successfully identified the subjects 97% of the times.

    SkullConduct uses the bone conduction speaker and microphone readily integrated into the eyewear computer and analyses the characteristic frequency response of an audio signal sent through the user’s skull.

    All mobile companies are now trying to integrate fingerprint readers and iris scanners in their devices, for authenticating people. The next big thing in biometrics might lie under our skin. Researchers are working on SkullConduct, an authentication system that uses a bone conduction speaker and mic on your head to identify you.

    SkullConduct works with modified Google Glass. It works by playing a one-second long audio clip through its speaker and then captures the sound after it’s traveled through the user’s skull. It analyzes the unique frequency to identify the wearer. The team found that their system correctly identified its test subjects 97 percent of the time. 

    So yes, there’s a still a way to go before it works perfectly.There are also some limitations to the system: 
    • It may not work properly if there’s enough background noise present to interfere with the audio. 
    • Users’ weight gain may change the feedback the mic receives, leaving the user locked out of their device.
    This technology is still in its development phase, so it is likely to improve with time. This technology can be used at very large scale for security purpose in future.
  • Google Glass assists cardiologists with heart surgery

    In a world’s first, a group of cardiologists has successfully used the eye-wearable device Google Glass to guide the opening up of a chronically blocked right coronary artery in the cardiac cath lab.
    Cardiologists from the Institute of Cardiology, Warsaw, Poland’s capital city, successfully restored blood flow in the occluded right coronary artery of a 49-year-old male patient assisted by Google Glass with an optical head-mounted display.
    The display of 3D computed tomographic reconstructions in a mobile application equipped with a hands-free voice recognition system and a zoom function enabled the physician-operators to clearly visualise the distal coronary vessel.
    It helped them verify the direction of the guide wire advancement relative to the course of the blocked vessel segment.
    The procedure was completed successfully with implantation of two drug-eluting stents.
    “This case demonstrates the novel application of wearable devices for display of data sets in the catheterisation lab that can be used for better planning and guidance of interventional procedures,” said lead investigator Maksymilian P Opolski from the Institute of Cardiology.
    “It also provides proof of concept that wearable devices can improve operator comfort and procedure efficiency in interventional cardiology,” Opolski added.
    Google Glass, consists of a wearable, hands-free computer with an optical head-mounted display worn by interventional cardiologists in the catheterisation laboratory.
    The optical head-mounted display can show and capture images and videos while interacting with the surrounding environment.
    This display is an example of the concept of virtual reality in which the user is supplemented with additional information generated by the device.
    “Mobile technology offers an incremental opportunity to expand the existing open platform for mobile applications, which overcome the economic and capacity limitations of advanced angiography systems with dedicated monitors for projection of Computed tomography angiography (CTA) data sets,” Dr Opolski pointed out.
    Furthermore, wearable devices might be potentially equipped with filter lenses that provide protection against X-radiation.
    Several medical specialties are already using it to train physicians and assist diagnosis and it also has potential for treatment, said the report published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology.

Externally, there's a 13-megapixel rear camera and a five-megapixel front-facing unit, which is well-suited for selfies and video chats.

    Lenovo Vibe X3 Lite


    The Lenovo Vibe X3 Lite is shown to be 153 mm in length with a width of 76 mm and thickness of 8.7 mm. It supports 4G connectivity and comes with a fingerprint scanner just under its rear camera. Color options include black, white, silver and gold.

    The device is also called the Lenovo Lemon X3 Lite. Pricing is estimated to be around $141, considering that the device will allegedly have a ¥899 price tag in China.

    If rumors regarding the Lenovo Vibe X3 Lite turn out to be legit, the device will be added to the ballooning statistics of budget smartphones from China rocking a fingerprint scanner.

    The feature has just made its way to low- and mid-tier offerings while high-end devices from premium mobile makers have already been seeded with the technology since last year.

    With the release of the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the ability to purchase items on Google will become as easy as touching a security sensor.



    As Tech Times reports, the popular mobile operating system will now offer its users fingerprint authentication which will lead to some swift buying power. On-line shopping will become easier than ever as Android users will now be able to authorize Play Store purchases with their fingerprints.
    As of right now only the new Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X will support this biometric security function. 
    The time saving fingerprint reader option is disabled by default, which means that users will have to specifically activate the option in the Google Play store if they desire to authenticate their payments with their fingerprints, but once this happens a user can purchase items in the Google Play store with a finger tap on the device's fingerprint sensor.



    Of course, if you are not too comfortable with this technology you can always have the option to just use your password.

    As USA Today reports, the new Android Marshmallow will feature multiple new features including a complimentary setting called App Standby, which will limit the battery drain on seldom-used apps, as well as a “predictive app” which will suggestion faster alphabetic scrolling along with other refinements to make your Android experience ever easier.
    Finger print scanners might be the future of security but they are not fool proof, as German hackers figured out a way to bypass the fingerprint scanner on Apple's iPhone 5S in 2013.
    As reported in CNBC, Alan Goode, the managing director of a U.K.-based security consulting firm Goode Intelligence, said that fingerprint technology in security is “all about the bottom line and making it more convenient."
