  • CREO MARK 1 : Specification and in-depth analysis

A new smartphone every month, sounds tempting, isn't it.

Creo, a Bengaluru -based  startup. have promised to provide experience of new smartphone every month, by giving software updates to user every-month. Creo Mark 1, priced at Rs 19,999 is available at Flipkart. After using this device for, here is my review and analysis of Creo Mark 1.

Design and Screen of Creo Mark 1

    Creo Mark 1 : Design
Creo Mark 1 features 5.5″ QHD LCD (  big-screen ) display that have layer of scratch-resistant Gorilla glass 3. On side panel there are wide metal frame,  where you can get anything you want to do  device.

    Creo Mark 1 : Design
Creo Mark 1 weights around 190g , it does feel a little hefty in comparison to other devices in this price range. Mark 1 have higher screen resolution of 2560x1440p in the display. As a result, the pixel density is 534ppi. That gives videos and pictures a sharper and crisper look .

    Creo Mark 1 : Design
On the bottom, there s USB  slot and speaker. At right side there are three round buttons, two for volume and one control power of device. On other side there two slot for micro SIM and micro SD card. Second slot is hybrid slot that can be used for SIM as well as SD card .

    Creo Mark : Design
Hardware and Processor of Creo Mark 1

Creo Mark 1 is powered by a 1.95GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio X10 SoC, which is Paired with a 3GB of LPDDR3 RAM. We have seen a variant of this processor with 3GB of RAM in the LeEco Le 1s smartphone, which is currently selling at Rs.10,999.

    Creo Mark 1 : Hardware

    Camera of Creo Mark 1

The 21-megapixel rear camera in Mark 1 is powered by Sony’s IMX 230 Exmor sensor. It can record 4K videos and comes with interesting features such as Live Photo (video within a photo) and 3D photos (which uses both front and rear camera to take 3D shots).

    Software of Creo Mark 1

Creo Mark 1 comes with  FUEL OS, which is based on Android. It comes with features such as Sense, a universal search engine that can find anything on the phone and can be evoked by a double tap on the home button.

Echo, which is a voicemail service of sorts that can work with any carrier, Retriever, which sends an email to you if another SIM is inserted in your device, smart forwarding to forward calls from one SIM to another one it is unreachable, notification manager, and segregated SMS inbox for messages from people and businesses, with quick reply and copy OTP functions.

    Creo Mark 1 : Software
But CREO's claim to fame is the 'A New Phone Every Month' initiative, where the company will push out updates to the phone every month that will add functionality to it. And the updates will be based on community feedback and what the users want, and you will be informed of all the changes before you install the update.

    Battery of Creo Mark 1

The Handset is packed with a 3100 mAh battery that comes with fast charging facility.

    Our Verdict

I personally am bit disappointed with processor used in Mark 1, Why not snapdragon 820 , that's question one should ask, well you can't expect a new phone who have low processing. Otherwise everything in this phone is perfect, specially screen ,if you are interested in buying this phone then go on but we suggest to wait for sometime as it may see a price drop very soon.

  • HONOR 5X "Mid-Ranged Budget Smartphone" Review

Honor 5X may not be the flagship of Huawei but it has some promising features that satisfy the needs of people who are interested in mid-ranged smartphones with high performance.

I'll be talking about things should know before buying honor 5x.

Honor 5X is available for Rs12999 both on flipkart and amazon. Honor 5x is available in 3 different colors gold silver and grey. My personal choice is gold because it gives you more premium look as compared to other colors.

    Honor 5 X
    Quick Specification
    • Snapdragon 616 (64bit)
    • 1.5 Ghz Octa Core (cortex A-53)
    • 2GB of RAM
    • 5.5 1080p HD IPS display
    • Adreno 405 GPU
    • 16GB Internal Storage
    •  Dual sim with micro SD card
    • 13 MP rear/5MP front camera
    • 3000 Mah of battery
    • Fingerprint scanner
    Honor 5X Design

As you can see honor 5X has some very decent specs. Although snapdragon 616 is not superior then snapdragon 615 in terms of speed but the performance is better because the phone doesn't heats up easily. Built quality is better than any mid ranged smartphone that is available in the market. It has metallic back with non removable  battery. It impresses the moment you pick it up although it doesn't have the premium look but has the same polished bevelled edges leading into the frame as of the Honor 7.

The power button and the volume rockers are beautifully placed on the right side of the smartphone. Honor 5x also weighs 158g which is less than you will expect from a 5.5 inch smartphone to be. On the left side we will find two slots one of them is a dual slim slot and the other one is the micro sd slot.

The upper and the lower edges at the back of Honor 5x are made up of plastic to ensure that antennas can receive a clear signal and you may check our another article on honor 5x speed test comparison.

    Honor 5X Hardware And Software

Honor 5x has a custom ui emui 3.1 which is not that impressive you can sense a little lag while using the smart phone although it has 2 gb of ram but almost 1gb of ram is consumed but custom rom and the ui . honor 5x is on android lollipop 5.1.1 and has been promised to be updated to android 6.0 marshmallow with emui 4.0 .

My personal favorite is the stock rom that is provided by Google because you will rarely face a lag in  the ui. Another feature that is missing is USB otg connectivity we were not able to connect to otg. Even after trying through third party apps like es file explorer . Battery back up is very impressive the beast hold 3000mah of non removable battery but the performance of the battery is pretty impressive  if you are person who charges there phone once in a day this phone is a go for you.

    Honor 5X Screen

Let us now talk about the display of the phone it has 5.5inch 1080p hd  ips  display with nice viewing angles. The display is sharp but the major problems in the display are they attract fingerprints on the screen.

Honor 5x has pixel density of 401ppi.The film which come on the screen with phone can be removed, at the expense of scratch protection guard. Major drawback is the screen does not have gorilla or other reinforced glass. If you love to watch movies and videos on your smartphone it promises you a quality experience.

    Honor 5X Camera

Honor 5x has 13 megapixel rear camera and 5 megapixel front facing camera. Although front  facing and rear camera are impressive but I had a moderate experience with the rear camera in indoor and artificial lighting.

However the camera clicks great pictures outdoors. It highly depends on the lighting if you want to take good pictures you have to make sure you have proper lighting for it. Some sample pictures took by the camera.

    The special feature

The special feature that Honor 5X brings to you is the finger print scanner. Finger print scanner is located at the back side of the phone and it is also pretty accurate. It does not take long to setup the finger print scanner and it can also be configured of other settings like there are 7 actions that can be activated, ranging from answering calls or taking photos to opening the notification panel or recent apps:  just above everything is do-able.

Unfortunately apple still provides the best finger print scanner in form of touch id but then what do you expect more from an mid ranged budget smartphone. Overall rating of the phone according to me is    8.5 out 10.

    Gaming review

Honor 5X can handle heavy games like Asphalt , modern combat 5 , nova 3 real racing  and many other.

I faced a little lag and frame skip but that is very rare. If you are person who likes to play games in the free time this smart phone is a go for you and the advantage is it doesn't heats up easily.

We will soon publish detail video on review , stay tuned to tecphlie..

The screen is 5.15-inches, full HD display, and the fingerprint scanner is on the front. Xiaomi claims that Mi 5 features a very vibrant display with 600-nit brightness, and is also 17 per cent more power efficient.

    Camera

Xiaomi Mi 5 has a 16MP rear camera with 4-axis OIS, and the front camera is 4 megapixels with a wide-angle lens. Xiaomi claims that the new 4-axis OIS will be better for long shots, as well for low light and moving objects. Hugo Barra called it a “technology breakthrough,” during the MWC launch event.

Mi 5 has a Sony IMX298 sensor, PDAF and DTI for pixel to pixel isolation, which prevents colour-bleeding.

    Battery, OS, Connectivity

Xiaomi Mi 5 has a 3000mAh battery. The company says the fast charge on the phone allows it to give two and a half hours of talktime after charging for just 5 minutes. Xiaomi Mi 5 runs Android 6 with MIUI 7 on top.
  • Specification and First Impression of Xiaomi Mi 5, Set launch in India on March 31

    MI5 : Specifications
While it was already confirmed that the Xiaomi Mi 5 will soon be launched in India, now we have the exact date. The Chinese company has started sending official invites for the India launch event, which is scheduled for March 31.

In case you don't already know, the flagship smartphone has been on sale in the company's home country of China for nearly a month now - except for the Pro variant, which is scheduled to be launched there on April 6.

There's currently no information on the exact price tag the phone will carry in India, but that won't remain a secret for long as the launch is just days away

    Key Features

Xiaomi Mi 5 comes in three variants – 3GB+32GB, 3GB+64GB and 4GB+128GB storage options. The 4GB version with 128GB RAM is called as the Xiaomi Mi 5 Pro. Once again, we will have to wait and see if Xiaomi launches all three versions in India.

Xiaomi Mi 5 features a 5.15-inch full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Yes Mi 5 doesn't come with Quad HD display. The smartphone is powered by Qualcomm’s latest and most powerful Snapdragon 820 processor.

Xiaomi Mi 5 is running MIUI 7 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The new smartphone comes with five default themes and has access to 15,000 more in store.

Mi 5 also comes with updated cameras. The rear image sensor is a 16MP one from Sony while the front snapper is a 4MP from Qualcomm.

During Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 launch, Hugo Barra expressed company’s commitment to India market and how Xiaomi happens to be a startup at heart even after significant success with smartphone business.
  • Honor Holly 2 Plus : Review

Priced at Rs 8,499 INR Honor Holly 2 Plus is one of the best budget phone available under 10k segment. When the Huawei Honor Holly was released in 2014, it left a lot to be desired, in terms of both the camera features as well as the overall performance of the phone.

However, the Holly 2 Plus can change the legacy of its predecessor. Here’s how the budget smartphone fares.

    Design

The Honor Holly 2 Plus is made up of poly-carbonate body with a removable textured back panel. The battery however, stays embedded inside the handset which is reticules. Once the panel is removed, the dual Micro-SIM slots and microSD card slot can be seen.

With its compact body, the smartphone is perfect for users with average hand size. The best part about this phone is that you can type very easily with one hand at good speed. The power and volume buttons are on the right. The speaker grille is at the bottom, and this might cause sound to be muffled when holding the smartphone horizontally to watch videos.

The display is not so impressive as we thought that company will improve. The Honor Holly 2 Plus features a 5-inch HD (720x1280-pixel) IPS display with a reasonable pixel density of around 293 ppi. This screen must be loved by HD screen lover as it contains sharp text display. But this option is best in this price segment.

The screen is vibrant sharp and color is glowing. Some news company says that in limited time the Honor Holly 2 Plus showed no signs of lag while switching between apps. The Holly 2 Plus contains a 64-bit 1.3GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6735P SoC with integrated Mali-T720 graphics and 2GB  RAM. The details performance of this phone will be seen in our full review.

You have to wait for our detail review. The EMUI 3.1 LITE skin on top of Android 5.1 Lollipop is straightforward and should be easy for users to get accustomed to.

    Battery

It has a 4000mAh battery rated to deliver up to 48 hours of continued usage. The company also says its Smart Power 3.0 mode can give you 30 percent more battery life, allowing the phone to run for up to 20 hours with the charge down to 10 percent.
The Holly 2 Plus also features reverse charging, so you can use its battery to charge other devices through the Micro-USB port. We will confirm the battery life and all other aspects of this phone's performance when we run it through our thorough review process. Stay tuned.

    Camera

Huawei did a major overhaul of the camera features on the Holly 2 Plus, and upgraded the 8MP rear camera to a 13MP f/2 one and also added LED flash to the mix. The front facing camera has also been upgraded from 2MP to 5MP.

    Sample Shot : In Light
The shooting features of the camera phone are actually quite basic, which might just be a good thing, considering how many smartphones these days seem to just pack in the shooting modes, which can be quite confusing. One can adjust ISO and White Balance, as far as manual control goes.

The image quality, however, is a mixed bag. In bright light, the phone is able to capture good quality images, but this completely reverses in low light. Colour reproduction is also not the best, with most appearing dull and muted. Another let down is the video capabilities, as the phone can only shoot 720p video.

    Storage and Connectivity
Honor Holly 2 plus have 16 GB internal memory, which can be expanded up to 128 GB using a microSD card.

The Honor Holly 2 Plus has 16GB of storage, out of which users will only get around 9.4GB for their apps and media. However, there is always the option to pop in a microSD card for up to 128GB more space. 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, and Micro-USB connectivity are also standard. This phone will be available in White, Grey and Gold.

    Hardware and Processor

Honor Holly 2 Plus comes with 1.3 GHz Quad-core of MediaTek MT6735P and have RAM of 2GB. All thank to  the 64-bit Quad Core processor and 2 GB LPDDR3 RAM which allows to operate device smoothly and without any lag

Features of Honor Holly 2 Plus
    •     4000 mAh Battery with Smart Power 3.0
    •     Dual Sim World Phone - Supports 2G, 3G, 4G and CDMA
    •     13 MP Primary + 5 MP Secondary Camera, with Wide Angle Selfie

Apple today announced a new iPad in the iPad Pro family, debuting the 9.7-inch iPad Pro with all of the features of the existing 12.9-inch iPad Pro, including the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard support. The 9.7-inch iPad Pro even has a few improved features over the 12.9-inch version, including a True Tone display and better rear and front-facing cameras.

iPad Pro is a new generation of iPad that is indispensable and immersive, enabling people to be more productive and more creative. It's incredibly fast, extremely portable, and completely natural to use with your fingers, Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard. And now it comes in two sizes," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. "The 9.7-inch iPad Pro has a new Retina display with True Tone technology, four-speaker audio system, blazing fast A9X chip, 12-megapixel iSight camera, 5-megapixel FaceTime HD camera, faster wireless, and support for Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard. It is the ultimate upgrade for existing iPad users and replacement for PC users.
Described by Apple's marketing chief Phil Schiller as "the ultimate PC replacement," the 9.7-inch iPad Pro uses the same display components as the 12.9-inch iPad Pro -- custom timing controller, photo alignment, and oxide TFT -- resulting in a display that's 40 percent less reflective and 25 percent brighter than the display in the iPad Air 2. It also has a wider color gamut with 25 percent greater color saturation for more vivid colors. Like the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro's display includes support for the Apple Pencil.

Unique to the 9.7-inch iPad Pro is a True Tone display that uses four-channel ambient light sensors to measure the color temperature of the ambient environment, changing the temperature of the tablet's display to match. The feature goes hand-in-hand with Night Shift, the blue light reduction mode in iOS 9.3.

Measuring in at 6.1mm, the 9.7-inch iPad Pro weighs less than a pound. Design wise, it looks like a smaller 12.9-inch iPad Pro, with four speakers for improved audio and a Smart Connector for use with accessories like the new Smart Keyboard. Inside, there's an A9X chip that offers incredible performance and a long battery life, plus there's support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi With MIMO technology, faster LTE advanced, and the Apple SIM to connect to LTE networks while traveling.

The 9.7-inch iPad Pro has an improved 12-megapixel camera, with Focus Pixels for faster focusing, a better image signal processor, advanced noise reduction, and better face detection. It's the same camera used in the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus, with support for 5K video, 63-megapixel panoramas, and Live Photos. There's also a rear-facing flash, the first flash included in an iPad. Apple has also improved the front-facing camera, introducing a 5-megapixel FaceTime HD camera with a front-facing Retina Flash feature.

The new 9.7-inch iPad Pro comes in four colors: Silver, Gold, Space Gray and Rose Gold. Pricing starts at $599 for 32GB of storage, with 128GB and a new 256GB option available for $749 and $899, respectively. Cellular models are also available in 32GB ($729), 128GB ($879), and 256GB ($1,029) configurations.

The 32 GB Wi-Fi variation starts at $599, while the 128 GB and 256 GB Wi-Fi variations are priced at $749 and $899, respectively. It'll be available for pre-order on March 24. Additionally, Apple announced that the 12-inch iPad Pro will be available in a larger 256 GB variation for $1,099.

The 9.7-inch iPad Pro will be available to order beginning Thursday, March 24, from Apple.com, and in Apple's retail stores, through select carriers and Apple Authorized Resellers on Thursday, March 31, in Australia, Canada, China (Wi-Fi models only), France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Singapore, the UK, US Virgin Islands and the US.

The Apple Pencil for the 9.7-inch iPad Pro continues to be available for $99. The Smart Keyboard designed for the smaller tablet is priced at $149.

Apple is continuing to sell the 9.7-inch iPad Air 2, dropping the price to $399, and the company has added a new 12.9-inch iPad with 256GB of storage for $1,229.

  • Oppo R9 And R9 Plus Officially Announced

The Oppo R9 and R9 Plus were just officially announced in China. The smartphones share the same design language, but under the hood there are plenty of differences.

    Oppo R9

The R9 is the smaller of the two, which doesn't at all mean it's actually small - it's a phablet with a FullHD AMOLED 5.5-inch display. Oppo is proud of its accomplishments in bezel size, citing a minimal 1.66mm on the sides, and the whole thing measures 151.8 x 74.3 x 6.6mm.

The R9 is powered by a Mediatek Helio P10 chipset with four of its Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.0GHz, the other four at 1.0GHz. 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage are on board and the R9 can take up to 128GB of microSD cards in the hybrid microSD/second-SIM slot.

It gets interesting in the camera department, where the front shooter actually boasts a higher-res sensor and brighter lens than the rear one. Selfies are taken care of by a 16MP imager mated with an f/2.0 lens with a 78.1-degree field of view. On the back you have a 13MP sensor behind a 5-element lens with f/2.2 aperture and 80.6-degree FoV.

    Oppo R9 Plus
The R9 Plus ups the ante in several key areas. The obvious one, and the one meriting the Plus moniker, is screen size and the R9 Plus comes with a 6-inch display, again FullHD AMOLED. Side bezels are a smidgen wider at 1.76mm, but the screen-to-body ratio is still higher at 79.3% compared to 77.7% for the R9.

Running things is the Snapdragon 652 chipset with quad-core 1.8GHz Cortex-A72's and quad-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A53's. RAM is 4GB here as well, and base storage is 64GB, but there's also a 128GB version. In case you want to expand on that (just how much music and photos do you have?) there's a hybrid microSD/second-SIM slot as well.

There's a bit more logic in the camera setup on the R9 Plus, and while the front 16MP snapper is the same, on the back you get another 16MP camera as opposed to the R9's 13MP unit. This one uses the Sony IMX298 sensor (like on the Huawei Mate 8) with a 6-element f/2.0 lens. Thanks to the more powerful chipset the R9 Plus is capable of 4K video recording, unlike the regular R9.

Both smartphones have a fingerprint sensor on the front below the display, marking a departure from the rear-mounted solution on the R7 Plus. VOOC Flash Charge is present on the two (but not the crazy fast Super VOOC we saw at MWC), and the R9 has a 2,850 battery capacity, while the Plus stretches that to 4,120mAh. Another shared property, and one that doesn't sound too good, is the OS version - Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, when Android N previews are already out.

The Oppo R9 and R9 Plus both come with 4G LTE support, naturally. Wi-Fi 802.11 ac is only available on the R9 Plus, the R9 is limited to the slower standards. Another connectivity difference is Bluetooth - v4.0 on the R9, v4.1 on the R9 Plus (to better deal with interference with LTE frequencies).

The Oppo R9 is priced at CNY 2,799 in China ($430), and is available for pre-order now, with shipments scheduled to start on March 24. The R9 Plus is obviously costlier at CNY 3,299 ($510) for the 64GB version and will hit Chinese shelves on April 12. Global availability remains to be detailed.
  • Device I Use : "Moto G 3rd Gen "

Most of people I meet, use to say that I am somehow bit biased toward Motorola products, maybe they are right as I own most of devices that are marked as Motorola, yesterday I found some old pic of Moto G3 and decided to give in depth review and specification.

The first Motorola Moto G hit a golden formula. Low price, a nice screen and near-perfect performance made it the best affordable phone ever back in 2013. At that time we hadn’t seen a phone that good sell that cheap.

Motorola hasn’t changed things up too much in this third-generation edition. However, it has gained a few pounds now that it can afford to be a little less aggressive on the price, since ‘Moto G’ has become a widely recognized name to trust.

At ₹12,999 for the 16GB, 2GB RAM version we’re looking at, the Moto G is more a good deal than the ‘pick up your jaw from the floor’ bargain the first-gen model came across as. However, by radically improving the camera and keeping performance tip-top, it’s still better than the affordable options you can get from rivals such as Sony and Samsung.

For all the hardware improvements, the Moto G still comes across as a cheaper phone, not a super high-end one. The back is plastic, with a ridged embossed finish that doesn’t seem remotely flash. And at 11.6mm thick it’s pretty chunky. Ergonomic curves mean it still feels good, but is fairly large among 5-inch phones.

One of the real spotlight improvements for 2015 is the Moto G’s waterproofing. Little rubber seals on the battery cover keep water out of the SIM and microSD memory card slots, and the headphone/charge sockets are specially treated so they don’t mind being dunked in water.

The exact resistance level is called IPX7, meaning it can be submerged in water for 30 mins. It’s certainly not going to suddenly behave funny after getting caught in a torrential downpour. One potential issue is that one of the clips on the back cover is dead easy to miss: just make sure you get the lot.

    Demi HD display
There has not been all that much progress on the screen, though. The Moto G has a 5in 720p IPS LCD display, just like the last version’s. We’re in the same territory as some of the cheaper 1080p mobiles, such as the Honor 6 and EE Harrier.

As with every Moto G, the screen is still pretty charming, though. It’s sharp enough, has natural-looking colours, decent outdoors visibility and an oleophobic coating. This makes sure the screen doesn’t become a smudgy mess as soon as you get your fingers on it. The top layer is Gorilla Glass too. A few times during testing I managed to send the Moto G flying onto concrete, but it’s yet to pick up any significant body damage or screen scratches.

It’s pretty forgiving. Backlight uniformity in our Moto G isn’t perfect, with part of the screen appearing ever-so-slightly dimmer than the rest. But these little screen aberrations are pretty common, and something we’ve seen in previous Moto Gs.

Back in 2013, the Moto G set a new standard in display quality for cheaper phones. But this new one doesn't take things any further. The colour tone skews a little less warm, making the display appear brighter, but this version and the last play in the same quality league.

It’s a bit of a shame, but then it’s actually what the Moto G series is about. The idea is to get you a certain grade of experience that’s not light years away from phones twice the price. And instead of super-charging the screen it has fixed some of its weak spots, like the camera. As we’ll see in a bit.

Android 5.0 Lollipop with added Moto apps
Software-wise, the third Moto G is business as usual. You get Android 5.0 Lollipop in its standard form, with just a pair of extra Motorola apps added to the usual Google collection. That’s even fewer than before.

Motorola Migrate helps you bring over content from your old phone to your Moto G, and the Moto app compiles the few extra features Motorola has bunged-in. These include being able to silence your phone at certain times, perfect for making sure the little guy doesn’t wake you up at 12:30am while you’re trying to sleep, and Moto Display.

This lets the Moto G turn its screen on when it gets notifications, showing just the time and a simple white icon that tells you the sort of notification it is. It’s pretty neat, even if it works better with an OLED screen, which can use little battery when just using a bit of the screen.

    RESPECTABLE BATTERY LIFE
Still, it doesn’t ruin the Moto G’s battery life, which is solid if not spectacular. The phone has a 2470mAh battery, which is about what we’d expect from a phone with a 5in screen.

It’ll generally drain down to about 15-30 per cent by bed time without using any stamina-saving measures, offering performance roughly comparable with the other Moto Gs. Bar the pre-4G second-gen model, which has a fairly modest 2070mAh cell powering its 5in screen and therefore lasts less long.

Expecting two days’ use is a bit ambitious here, but you may be able to get there by using the Battery Saver mode hidden in Settings. This cuts out background data, meaning it uses very little charge when you’re not actively using the phone.

Battery life has never been a real shouting point of the Moto G series. It has been, and continues to be, simply respectable.

    LAG IS BANISHED

I’m glad to report that performance is back on track too. Recently, we took a closer look at the last-generation Moto G and found that with the latest software it’s simply not fast anymore. It made me ask: has the Moto G jumped the shark?

However, the 2GB RAM, 16GB storage version I’m currently using runs like a dream. There’s no creaky lag, transitions are super-smooth and while loading apps is slightly slower than it was with Android 4.4 KitKat, that’s true of every Lollipop phone. The only question is whether this performance is true for the cheaper 1GB, 8GB version we imagine many of you may be after. Especially since both phones support up to 32GB of MicroSD storage.

The 1GB RAM Moto G will be kinder on your wallet than its 2GB RAM cousin. Whether it offers the same oomph for less is something we’ll look into as soon as possible.

Fingers crossed it will, because this is at the root of why I fell for the original Moto G way back when. It was an affordable phone that, in day-to-day use, was just as snappy-feeling as a phone two or three times the price. That said, I have reason to worry the 1GB Moto G may feel annoyingly slow in parts: some of the other Moto Gs do with current software.

    Killer camera
The most impressive, most improved, part of the Moto G, though, is the camera. The original Moto G’s camera was pretty dreadful. The second-generation one was much better, but still one of the weakest parts of the design. This one is, shock horror, actually really quite good.

It’s a 13-megapixel camera with a dual-LED flash, coupled with a 5-megapixel camera on the front. This is fast becoming a pretty common spec among cheaper phones, but the Moto G is comfortably the best budget 13-megapixel pick I’ve used to date.

It’s a pure joy to shoot with, being fast, offering very solid dynamic range and a very good hit rate. It absolutely decimates the cameras of rivals like the HTC Desire 626 and Sony Xperia M4 Aqua, making them look flat-out rubbish.

Where other budget cameras are prone to dull looking shots, lens distortion when dealing with strong light sources and purply washes in tricky lighting, the Moto G copes with everything like a little star.

It feels like a fairly high-end camera in a lower-end phone, and is a massive upgrade over all previous Moto G cameras. In good lighting you get punchy, faithful colours, excellent contrast, fairly good metering and plenty of detail. We even like the phone’s processing, which has a fairly light touch compared with the vast majority of phones at this price.

It’s not just about image quality, either. The Moto G is fairly fast to shoot, avoiding obvious shutter lag that makes lesser phone cameras a pain to use.

The camera app is improved too. All Moto Gs use a custom Motorola camera app, one I’ve had a mixed opinion of to date. It has a slick look and UI, but its rotary dial menu system can feel fiddly in the heat of the moment. However, I’m taken with the latest addition: an exposure dial that sits right by the focus reticule.

It’s dead useful because when you choose a subject rather than letting the phone do the job itself, the Moto G also reverts to spot metering, using the light level of the subject to dictate exposure level. I found this often leads to overexposure of the scene, which then can be fixed with this little exposure dial with a quick intuitive gesture.

It could be a fiddly mess, but isn’t. Of course, it might be adding a bit too much manual control for some, robbing touch focusing of some of its simplicity.

The Moto G camera isn’t quite perfect, either. Its low-light skills are nothing too special, with only mild compensation for dark scenes, and obvious desaturation of reds when you’re dealing with indoors lighting. There is a low-light mode that alters the character of the noise reduction a bit and helps out with white balance, but its effects are fairly minor and feel like they should really be applied automatically.

You’ll need to keep your hands still to ensure sharp low-light photos too, as the camera uses shutter speeds as slow as 1/14 of a second. That’s pretty long for a phone without OIS.

Like the previous Moto Gs, the HDR mode is a bit heavy-handed too. I’ve appreciated this in the older models as their cameras often needed the help, unable to cope with certain situations without it. But now the Moto G’s camera is flat-out good, a little more subtlety would be appreciated. The HDR Auto mode is pretty solid, though, applying dynamic range boosting when needed. Stick to this and you’re all-but guaranteed good shots.

With a few tweaks and optical image stabilisation I’d love the Moto G camera even more, but even this middling low-light performance remains good, certainly better than average, at this level. It’s able to retain much more detail in poor lighting than most budget phones.

Motorola has put in excellent work here, earning not only a ‘most improved’ badge, but quite possibly a ‘best-in-class’ one too.

    A loud speaker

The Moto G’s speakers are better this time around too, and they look a lot subtler. The bottom speaker of the front-facing pair deals with audio, the top one is for calls. Overall, the new Moto G sounds a bit louder and a good chunk warmer compared to its predecessor.

Don’t go thinking it’ll be quite as good as the HTC One M8S’s BoomSound speakers, mind. While about as loud, the Moto G’s speakers lack the refinement of the best. They remain a little thin-sounding. But for the price I’m more than happy.

    Verdict

What more do you need? The Moto G third-gen model takes everything we loved about the previous Moto Gs, side-steps the performance issues we’ve seen recently from the old guard and adds in a great camera to finish off the package.

This is comfortably the best Moto G to date, adeptly sticking to the series’ style by fixing the weaker part of the older versions rather than turbo-charging its strong points with, for example, a 1080p screen. The only problem is that this is also comfortably the most expensive model in the series. We’ve lost some of that cut-throat bargain feel, although the waterproofing and significant camera improvements mean the extra expense is worth it.

Right now, we can only recommend the new 2GB RAM Moto G, because we simply haven’t been able to test its lower-end alternative yet. If you’re not desperate to spend on a new Moto G, then it’s probably worth holding off for our verdict on its cheaper edition with 1GB RAM. Especially, when prices for other smartphones are now dropping like no tomorrow.
